I'm trying to play King's Quest 8, I just bought it on GoG.

When I start up the game I get forced into a low resolution fullscreen mode. The game skips the opening movie and takes me straight to the main menu. At this point every thing keeps blinking in and out. If I get to options I can stop the blinking by setting the graphics to 3DFX mode instead of DriectDraw mode; I cannot select the third option, Direct3D.

So far inconvenient but not too problematic. The problem comes when I try to start the game with New Game. I get taken to a loading screen that says "Copying files to hard drive...", the progress bar at the bottom ticks up till it gets to about 1/6th full, at this point it stops, it doesn't progress any further no matter how long I wait. The game is frozen and the only way out of the game is to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and end the process. One time even this didn't work, it had locked up my entire computer and I had to force restart.

I've already done some searching around for solutions and so far nothing works. I have tried various compatibility modes and settings, including running the game as Administrator. I've got a CD drive, both physical and virtual, so that common problem doesn't seem to be the issue.

I have tried using a different glide wrapper, the highly recommended dgVooDoo2, but I have no idea how to make it work. I can't find any clear instructions for it (the ReadMe.txt basically just said, "it just works") and I don't know how to remove the nGlide wrapper that the game automatically installs.
EDIT: I have figured out the above wrapper issues. the dgVooDoo2 wrapper is now working for me, however the game still freezes at the same spot.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Here's my system specs for reference (it's a laptop):

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit (Service Pack 1)
DirectX version: 11.0
GPU processor: GeForce GT 630M
Processor: Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz 2.30GHz
RAM: 8 GB

Since a number of old help topics asked for this information, here's what my starttext.txt and Options.cs files say:

So I was making another attempt to play KQ8 today. Right off the bat I started up the game without changing anything from yesterday and I got the old "Eternity CD no found." error message I had seen talked about in older posts. However, that error message was mashed together with the difficulty selection menu. This is very odd since this comes up immediately without attempting to start a new game. Indeed I can't try to start a new game or anything as the program is completely unresponsive. I am forced to end the process to close the game.

The starttxt.txt and Options.cs files still say the same thing as in the post above.

I have no idea why this is coming up now and not yesterday. Was there some small update to the game last night? Regardless, it looks like I'll have to uninstall the game and try again from scratch...

Problems solved! Firstly, the "Eternity CD not found" problem seemed to be caused by the dgVooDoo wrapper. Playing with it's settings and dlls a bit fixed the issue (it seems like you should use the Napalm 'Glide3x.dll' file instead of the normal one).

As for my main initial issue. Some searching around old KQ8 topics led me to believe that the install directory might be the issue. So when I re-installed the game, I used the old default folder from the original game (C:\SIERRA\Mask\GAME) instead of GoG's default folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\GalaxyClient\Games\Kings Quest 8). This fixed the problem immediately.

So I must repeat. The GoG Galaxy Client's default install folder does not work. The directory name is either too long or uses illegal characters that the game can't understand ( I'm looking at you, '(x86)').

Hopefully this post will help people enjoy this game in the future.

(It seems like I apparently can't mark my own posts as solutions. That's dumb.)

Then you may mark mine -- quoting you -- as the solution! I am beyond ecstatic that I found your post just now. I've been having the *exact* same issues with very similar system specs as you, and I've been going crazy trying to solve this. I tried all of the same things you did initially, too (though I didn't get dgvoodoo2 working and still haven't bothered yet; if I get the game itself working, I'll tackle it at that point). Asking GOG for help was not fruitful, and I found help in the forums for all kinds of other issues I didn't have. No one's talked about this or posted a resolution until now. I am grateful for you! Now, if I could only figure out how to get Galaxy to install to a different directory to help avoid this problem in the future... I didn't see any place it would let me specify one. For now I just moved the contents over into a folder in the place & format you mentioned, and I can indeed start a new game now! No more freezing partway into "Copying files to hard drive..."!

I'm still, however, having issues with the video at the beginning. I see from another thread (http://www.gog.com/forum/kings_quest_series/kings_quest_8_giving_lag_and_showing_no_video_intro) that you and some others are still having this issue as well, but it sounds like the video does indeed play for you if you start it from the main menu option. This doesn't work for me. I can hear the soundtrack, but I just get a message that says "Video not available, cannot find 'vids:iv50' decompressor." Have you experienced this or come across the issue/solution in the forums? What compatibility modes have you specified from your game's shortcut?

You could try nicode's re-encoded AVIs.
Hi all. I have a problem with KQ8. It crashes just about at the end of 'Loading Country of Daventry'.
A Windows error box appears, and attempts to identify the error. The game then just loops through two Windows error messages.

System: I run Windows 10 on a 64 bit machine; Ram is 8 GB; Game is set to load as XP Pro SP3 compatible.

KQ7, KQ6 and KQ5 all run well with the Dos Box simulator activating at the start of the game. KQ8 does not load Dos Box at the start.

I can get it to run on an old 32 bit machine running XP Pro, but not on Windows 10.

Has anyone encountered a Win 10 incompatibility?

Does anyone know if KQ8 should load through Dos Box like the other KQ games?

Thanking you in advance

Nope, this is a result of the incomplete patch GOG uses to bypass the original copy protection. The English and Brazillian Portuguese v1.0.0.3 CD-ROM's use a different version of Mask.exe that doesn't include the GetDriveType() API call and don't have the problem as a result. You need to use Glide2x.dll; Mask.exe isn't even checking for Glide3x.dll (Glide v3 didn't exist at the time the game was made).

I came across this command to register indeo video support on windows 10 64bit and it worked.

cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64
regsvr32 ir50_32.dll

I got the information from https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/topic/1886-indeo-codec-windows-10/

I also tried to install the codecs on this page but they told me I already had indeo installed. So the only problem is that it doesn't register itself on windows 10.

http://www.sierrahelp.com/Games/KingsQuest/KQMoEHelp.html#IV50Decompressor

I also have it installed at E:\Games\GOG Galaxy\Games\Kings Quest 8. so it doesn't need the original installation path.
