I have installed King's Quest 8 on my Windows 10 computer via GOG Galaxy, but when I try to start the game, what appears to be a tiny little version of the King's Quest 8 poster picture pops up for a fraction of a second and then it goes back to the desktop. I've tried every compatibility settings available (from Win95 up to Win8), but the same thing happens -- the game refuses to even launch.

Thinking it might be Windows 10, I decided to try launching it on Ubuntu 15.10 using WINE through PlayOnLinux. I wanted to see if I got something different than what was happening on Windows 10. The same exact thing happened: a quick flash of what looks like a tiny picture of the Mask of Eternity poster and then it closes. No error messages, no warnings, no crashes, it just refuses to run.

I've tried every trick I've seen here -- tried both nGlide and the Glide Wrapper alternatives with all suggested settings, multiple compatibility modes in Win10 and WINE, still the exact same issue with no Windows-based error messages, no "WINE has crashed", no "This Program Has Caused a Problem"... other than the quick blip of that picture, it refuses to run.

I'm at my WITs end here (pun intended). Is there anyone out there who had this complete refusal-to-run issue? :(

Runs fine, win10x64 here, build 14291, R9 380 4GB, Crimson 16.3.1 drivers.

Here is my options.cs file content:

KQSound::setSpeechVol 0.93
KQSound::setSfxVol 0.87
KQSound::setMusicVol 0.87
setShadowMask 15
useDynamicLighting 1
set Options::Captions true
notStartingHelp 0
assignGModeName Glide
setBrightness 46
set800mode 0

If your assignGModeName is currently set to "software" the game will crash every time.

Running nGlide 1.05 and the supplied Mask.exe file by Zeus (maker of nGlide, which I believe is still available on his site.) http://www.zeus-software.com/

Here's a link to the mask.exe

Although the game is set to 640x480, nGlide runs it as I set it, @ 1920x1200. Graphics in the game-play portion of the game look *much better* at high resolution.

The only compatibility option I have set in the shortcut is "Run in Admin" mode.

I have the same problem. I have never been able to play this game on my installation of Win10. It worked fine on XP. My options.cs file looks just like yours, except for the volume entries.

First time I've seen a post on GOG that reflects my problem. The program gets to the copying files to the hard drive screen and crashes after about 20%, every time.

The only error message I receive is the generic Windows notice "Mask of Eternity has stopped working".

Sounds like an issue with the remove/copy logic while loading a world in the release version. First you could try to extract the game files and to disable the CD-ROM logic: see https://www.gog.com/forum/kings_quest_series/kings_quest_8_crashes_on_launch/post4

If that doesn't help, read the next post and try the current version of kqmoefix. It is not yet complete, but it already solves a lot of compatibility issues for Windows 2000+ and Wine.

ps: 'n you should rename the glide2x.dll in the game directory and install a newer version of nGlide.
