This game will not work on Win 10 PC
It will launch in a big ugly window.
You will see the options, new game, load game etc.
Choosing new game will load two screens in which the game attempts to unpack files.
Then the game will crash.
Subsequently the game will crash on launch.
Launching from exe file directly will result in immediate crash.

This game will not work on my XP Laptop too.
The first time you will actually get into the game itself, move Connor around etc.
Subsequently the game will crash on launch, either from the GOG desktop shortcut or from the exe file.

Installing the game on win 10 using the original CD:
The game crashes on launching the exe. Changing compatibility does not help. Sierrra Utilities will not uninstall the game, you have to use your own system to uninstall. You will find that Sierra Utilities is an invasive application, it will notify you that it has put some driver files into Windows/Systems folder, and although the files are not in use buy other programs you may choose to leave them there (I chose to remove the drivers). Also, it will not uninstall itself when it finds other Sierra programs on your hard disk (Gabriel Knight 3).

Installing the game on XP Laptop using the original CD:
The game works, but only in Direct Draw with some graphics options. Running it with Direct 3D will result in uglier graphics so I decide to go back to Direct Draw.

Conclusion: Only Pay for this bundle when it is on sale, and only buy it for KQ7. From what I read on the forum, KQ 8 will not work unless you do some major tweaking. You might have better luck installing the game from the CD.
The version of Mask.exe GOG uses is crap, their incomplete patches to it don't help the matter either.

If you have the CD, you should use the installer from http://sierrahelp.com this should resolve most of the problems. I haven't checked in a while to see if Collector is still using the script patches or NicoDE's runtime patches, but this will also unpack the world folders and make loading times way faster. (hint: add "set PlayFromCD 0" in Console.cs if you unpack manually using kqmoevol; We set this by default in the executable included in the installer ;-) )

Speaking of NicoDE, it looks like he's been working on his code re-write today. Don't know when he'll release the update though. Old version can be found at http://svn.nicode.net/kqmoefix/bin/ which will patch the infamous TalkComplete bug that causes several game breaking hangups throughout the game. Should solve a lot of the problems with the GOG executable too.
I'm working on it. It'll take some days to get my hands on a Windows 10 system ro test some stuff...
I'm still alive and working on it in my spare time.
But I need more time to implement and test the workarounds for window borders and video in DirectDraw/Software mode (the game is also temporarily switching to Software mode for playback if 3Dfx/Glide is active).

In the meantime I wrote a batch script to speedup the loading times (also works with the GOG release):
http://svn.nicode.net/kqmoevol/bin/
Copy the and the [url=http://svn.nicode.net/kqmoevol/bin/kqmoepfd.cmd]kqmoepfd.cmd into the game directory and run the kqmoepfd script.

---

Note that extracting the kqmoevol.exe from the kqmoevol.zip requires a password ("kqmoevol"). I no longer provide compiled programs as direct downloads (due to web spiders reporting and spreading false alarms - which, in the end, results in bad site rating and blocked access behind enterprise firewalls).

Well, I did not yet had enough time to complete the research, development, and testing.
Therefore, I decided to commit the latest test version with the new setup/config tool.

http://svn.nicode.net/kqmoefix/bin/

Extract the kq8fix.exe from the kqmoefix.zip (archive password "kqmoefix") into the root of the game directory, run it, and check the Mask.exe in the list to enable the shim.

Best regards,
Nico

ps: the project isn't dead, I currently just don't have enough spare time :-)
I just wanted to thank you for the fix Nicode. :) I just bought the game and was searching for a fix, feeling discouraged and scared of never able to play KQ8 again but then you came and saved the day (just a few years before I got here).

Thank you friend! ^_^

Necroing this in case someone buys the game during the sale. This fix finally made the game able to run on my system.
3Dfx runs super slow even with the wrapper, but at least the game launches and runs with DirectDraw.

Thanks, nico
So even after following all the steps provided and attempting all the fixes given or that I can find my problem with running this game continues to persist.

I get to the Main Menu just fine.
I can adjust any of the options just fine.

When I click "New Game" and select combat difficulty it goes to the loading screen. The loading bar gets about 1/4 of the way across and then stops, followed by an immediate crash to desktop with no further explanation of error.

I am running Windows 10
Intel Core i7-9750H 2.60GHz
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070
32GB DDR5

As much as I would love to actually play this game ( as I never actually have played it) I cannot seem to get it to work regardless of what I try to do.
Two years later and still having this issue

I'm not sure why you're surprised, I offered to give them a solution to the CD-ROM issues (game won't launch on machines without physical/virtual optical drives) in October 2012. They've been ignoring the people offering fixes for the game for a lot longer than 2 years.

I guess I had hoped someone up there cared enough to give people a working product.

Can I write this purchase off as a charitable donation?

Instead of posting here, message support and ask them to take action on Request #1457154. They have the exact changes they need to make.
