This is a bug I see many other people are dealing with too, but no ticket on this forum.
Spoilers for those who haven't progressed in this quest yet!
The quest starts off fine; I talk to the monk, then the abbot and the other guy next to him, and refuse the other guy's request. Then I go back to the monk. I get attacked by three hoodlums and kill them.
From here everything goes to shit. For killing those guys, even though they came at me, I am wanted in Bylany and even the monk runs away from me. I proceeded by going to the man who found the bones and he told me where he found them. I then go to seek out the bones, I find the spot where they were buried, and the bones are no longer there. The game tells me to go back to the monk but keeps on showing the marker for where the bones are buried, to dig them up. Talking to the monk (after waiting a week for my wanted status to go away), he just tells me to find the bones.
PS I did the quest straight away after starting it. Some people online seem to mention a hidden timer, but I doubt that that's the reason for this.
