The reviews shortly after release were not so positive due to the masses of bugs. What is the current state? Is the game playable now?

Well, I bought it last night, started it today, had to Task Manage to get out of the game when ESC key stopped working and I couldn't get out of an info screen and back to the game. I'm starting to regret paying even the "sale" price and I'm barely into it. As you noted, tons of bug topics here.
i've been playing since it came out and i can say that it's much better now. so many things wouldn't work before (or work properly), but now that patches and fixes and have been applied, everything is much better. it's a really good game and if you;re a history buff like myself then it's even more awesome!

Playable most of the time. You're gonna encounter more than a few annoying things, but nothing game-breaking.
From a person that plays a lot of Bethesda games, this game runs very well.

I'm currently over 100 hours in and haven't had one crash. Minor bugs with NPCs doing some minor wierd things happen, but if you have played any kind of Bethesda game you have basically learned to block these things out.

It probably still needs some tuning performance wise since I'm about 90 FPS on a GTX1080Ti on High settings, and it dips to 50-60 in some areas, mainly at night because of shadows I would assume.

But to answer your question the game is very playable.

If you don't mind, which version of the game are running? Thanks...

This game is entirely unplayable for me due to infinite loading screens. I'm talking about the loading screens that never load and you have to control-alt-delete out of the game. Look on youtube. There are videos showing others complaining about this issue. One guy even posted a two hour long video of just the loading screen. This game never should have been released in this state and the patches are only making this issue worse.
I'm considering getting the game on the promotion as i'd like to think that more patches will come over time. What do you guys think?
I am rather shocked at how janky this game is. For all the praise it got I expected something at least holding together well, but this looks like it's about to fall apart at any moment - those clunky animations, texture blurring, bad object collision - this is really disheartening. Add to that completely unfriendly and unintuitive systems (lockpicking works only via mouse and keyboard for me, combat is altogether not functional) and you have something so amateurish it's baffling how they are asking this much as its base price.
I still may find it interesting, but so far (after 1.5h) I wasn't really able to finish one quest without bugging out, dying, and finally modding the game to be able to save whenever I want. And I still only managed to cheat my way to finishing one subquest. And then dying when a magical old man ran as fast as I did uphill and clubbed me to death.

If a true RPG experience entails all this nonsense, than colour me unimpressed.

Bought the game ~3 hours ago... still unable to get it to run (done most workarounds in my book and some of others still trying more). Loading screen... then black screen for apparently infinity and no respond to anything. So not quite impressed.

I finally bought it--in the GOG 10th Anniversary Bundle for $25 (all three games!)...Now *that's* a price I can live with! That's a deal that my great aunt Minnie can write home about, eh?

I certainly hope I have your experience...;) Finger's crossed--letting Galaxy install the ~40GB game even as we speak!
Just wait until one of these loading screens pops up and you just sit there waiting and waiting and waiting.... It could happen at any time and you won't be able to proceed. Let's see how pleased with the game you are at that point.
i just want to say that it is possible to actually PLAY the game, and I really hope everyone who is having trouble can find a way to make it work, because it's the best game to have been released this year. might i suggest the playing order of: Kunesh, swordplay, charcoal, deutchs house and beer.
I've not had any serious issues thus far other than some of the peasants at Skarlitz using invisible hoes. And some frame rate drops in places. Otherwise it's generally running ok for me. I do hope warhorse can continue to polish and optimize the game though.

Same for me... one headless guy, but otherwise everything runs great.
