so 1.4 corrupted my previous saves, started a new game and the very first quest "get stuff back" pops an information screen where holding ESC is supposed to clear it but the game just seems to freeze up the only way to do anything is yo open the console and press Q is there a workaround for this?

Same here playing 1.4.2.

It turned out to be a mod in my case, one that conflicted with the scripts in the game I removed it only to find other major issues with 1.4.1 so reverted to 1.3.4 untill patch 1.4.2 was released.
