Pajama: I've heard back from support regarding the issue of the game connecting to the data centre. They do not see a problem and suggest that I contact the devs/publisher myself.
It seems that GOG thinks that the connection "
might be" to check for updates but they are not sure. Anyway, game now deleted and devs/publisher on my list never to buy from again.
Anyway, here is GOG's reply in full in case anyone is interested;
Our tests show that the game works without an internet connection and shows no signs of DRM. The connection might be to check if updates.
I can only suggest contacting the Developers/Publisher directly:

Sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks for the info/update.
Since it definitely works despite me blocking all connections to/from it via my firewall, I'll still keep it.
However I do agree that this is dodgy thing for the devs to be doing - even if it's just going for updates, the polite thing to do would be to 1) Inform the user this is happening, and 2) provide an option for the user to turn it off. On top of that, the fact that GOG only provides a "maybe" for what it's possibly doing, is kind of shady...
Apparently the Android version is even worse in this regard - it sends game stats regularly, and requires access to various elements of your phone in order to run (disallowing access actually stops the game from even starting). Which is a damn shame, since I would have bought it for Android otherwise.
As for the PC version - the devs should patch this "feature" out, or at least make it obvious and optional.
