Hey All,

I recently bought my friend a copy of Kathy Rain for her Mac. Unfortunately, she's having issues with her aspect ratio. The game is clearly supposed to be played in 4:3, but her mac is defaulting it to 16:9 by stretching the games aspect ratio.

I've been reading a lot of threads online, but most of the solutions are oriented towards PCs. People have suggested the winsetup executable in which there is a blackbar checkbox. Unfortunately, there is not an option like that on the mac version.

Another thread provided a suggestion straight from the developer that said to try changing some of the aspect ratio settings on the mac itself, but hers doesn't appear to have many scaling options and none of them give her the option to switch to 4:3.

It doesn't seem to be game breaking, but the inventory section is only partially visible. She can still work through it, but there are certain screens (like when viewing documents in the game such as evidence files) that get cut off. So she misses out on some of the more important text. Also, some of the environment exits are hidden below the cutoff point. So far she's been able to click on the exits, but I feel like at some point she might get stuck.

Is there a fix for this out there? I'm kind of at a loss for what to do.

Help!

Hi there,

It is possible to adjust the game settings by manually editing the .cfg file. If you open up the game folder and navigate to /KathyRain.app/Contents/Resources/acsetup.cfg, you can tweak the settings by editing the file in a text editor.

A few things you can try:

1. Add a new line in the .cfg with "sideborders=1" and see if that resolves the stretching.

2. If this doesn't work, temporarily change the desktop resolution when playing to any 4:3 resolution, such as 1600x1200, 1024x768 or 800x600. There is a very simple to use app called "Display Menu" in the app store, which can change the resolution of your monitor with a single click in a drop-down, and then back again.

3. As a last resort, windowed mode can be toggled by changing "windowed=0" to "windowed=1" in the .cfg.

This is what I did to correct the aspect ratio on my Mac:

1. Open up the game folder and navigate to /KathyRain.app/Contents/Resources/
Note: you need to right-click "KathyRain.app" and select "Show Package Contents".

2. Open the file acsetup.cfg with any text editor (TextEdit works fine).

3. Find the line "gfxfilter=max" and replace it with "gfxfilter=none"

4. Save and close the file acsetup.cfg. Run the game and now it should show black bars at both sides, using the correct aspect ratio (4:3).

Note: I'm using version 1.0.4 of the game, which is the current version available on GOG.
