Awesome game, glad its finally out!

However, the game does have a rather clunky consoley control scheme. Having to switch between keyboard and mouse (it makes me miss the full mouse control scheme from the original Journeyman Project Turbo and Buried in Time with the onscreen arrows, and ways of opening menus with mouse alone ).

Is there anyway to at least switch the movement from arrow keys to WASD? It would at least make it feel more natural, and I could keep my right hand mainly on the mouse control where its useable.

Like you found, F8 lets you rebind. The reason why it's so keyboard-heavy is a concession to when it was originally designed for consoles.. it's easier to remap controller buttons to keyboard keys than it is to switch it to mouse control.
Here's the control layout from the original Pippin version if you want to remap the keys for a "console experience":
