This is one of my favorite games and I have it in the boxed version, but for some reason, it will not play in the GOG version. I have requested a refund, but feel ignored on this subject. Here is my second email from one of the GOG guys after I wrote again:
Hello,
I apologise for not being able to respond sooner. This error is very
unusual for Windows XP, it is rather Windows 95 related.
Please try to install this codec pack:

Please let me know if it didn't work.

GOG.com
I downloaded the codec and tried playing, got the same error Cannot open video, vids:vidc cannot be found for decompressor (or something like that.) I've uninstalled the game.
I felt great getting games I liked and could play here, but now I feel skunked, as if no one cares whether the games work or not.
No posts in this topic were marked as the solution yet. If you can help, add your reply
Gog can't issue refunds on games purchased its in the terms of use. Its probably due to the fact the games are all DRM free so you could download a game and then ask for a refund and still keep the game.
As for feeling skunked, paczyk is trying to help you to get it working, did you email him back with the results?
Also if you post your systems specs, OS and what your problem is perhaps someone on these forums might have a solution to your problem.

At least you got a reply. It's been about two weeks, I've sent two emails and still no reply.

I first of all did the diagnosis and posted it on 6-30-10. I did not know about not refunding money, since Paczyk never once said no refunds for downloads. It took a long while for Paczyk to even respond the first time. THEN, when I was told about the codecs I did exactly what was suggested, I downloaded TWO different codecs to see if one or the other would work. Norton's on my PC would not allow me to do others since they were not trustworthy.. I did a basic codec and then a full codec, neither worked. I tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling 3 times. NOTHING worked. This is a game that I have the boxed version of, and that works on my other PC. I don't need it to work on my XP, this PC. I just wanted to play it on this PC. So, if GOG doesn't offer refunds, I can understand that. Would they offer another game download in place of Buried In Time? I should not be left short almost 6 dollars while they make money off my inability to get the game to function. GOG should not be be put in a bad position, either. So, another game??
I'm sorry to hear someone else is having problems with this (or any) game. I wanted to INSIST that if GOG cannot give refunds that they make this right for BOTH of us and help to get the game up and running. It's only fair. I won't buy another thing from them until they do and I guess you should, too!
Heading to bed soon but I searched around and I'm guessing the part of the error was "cvid" instead of "vidc"... If so I can see why the GOG tech was a little surprised, especially that it's happening on Win XP.
If you are still wanting to give the game another go, try this download:
http://www.freepctech.net/files001/camerapak.zip -- don't worry the file is completely safe, you can search for it from another site if need be.
It contains the cvid codec, which I believe is nowadays included with DivX or something along those lines. Try restarting your computer after installation.
It's really odd you were getting the error, and I can see why the GOG tech support mentioned Win 95, hence this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q138261

Hi and thank you for your help. I have gotten the game to play perfectly on my Vista laptop instead.

If you think about it, the reason you can't get a refund would also mean they can't give you another. The game is DRM free, even if they remove it from your account, you still have it. To get a refund in a shop you'd have to give the game back, how do you give these back? Still it's good to see you got it working anyway.

That is most peculiar. The FourCC CVID is for Cinepak, which has been included with Windows since 1995... it doesn't have anything to do with DiVX....

I would suggest that you might have accidentally installed the 64-bit version rather than the 32-bit version (A 32-bit program can only use 32-bit DLLs) but since you mentioned XP I guess it's the 32-bit version...

This is the official site. You could try reinstalling just Cinepak and see if that makes any difference....
