In JA1, at the end of each day, there's a chance some smartass merc will quit their job because they're unhappy. This can happen both with mercs that were on the field as with mercs that were at the compound repairing equipment or tending patients. When this happens, they usually voice their concern, then you have a chance to win them back raising their salaries but in most cases this is useless because it's too expensive to raise salaries in this fashion.

So does anyone know what happen with the shit they were packing when they decide to leave? Do they keep it or do they return all equipment to the general pile? Also, is it any different with a mechanic that was repairing equipment (and thus was carrying said equipment in hand)? I couldn't verify because of the shitty savegame style of this game (I can't restore a mid-day game if I finished my last day).

I'd be grateful if only people who are sure about this answered the question... I can do guesswork myself, and it doesn't look good.

I managed to verify for certain. Here's what I found: when the day ends, a merc on duty that quits his job takes his carried equipment with him.

I could not verify for the cases where mechanics or doctors quit their jobs from the compound. Will try to provoke such a situation and post here.

Hey there, I always had the sneaking suspicion that the mercs were pilfering one thing or the other when they got fired. So I decided to run a test. The test is very easy, before you go out on a mission just record what you have in inventory and what you have on the mercs you are going to fire (or quit if you know who is). Then hit the C button to compress time and the day flies away. You can then compare easily what they had versus the inventory.

Anyways here are the results.

Quitters STEAL. Yup, they take everything but the kitchen sink. This test is easy, Dr. Fox quits if you get a merc killed, so just hire her to run the test. I dressed her up with helmet, goggle and vest and gave her 2 med kits, a first aid kit, a beretta, a 357 Magnum w/ silencer and a stick of dynamite. I proceeded to get a merc killed and came back, she quit and like a fed up wife, took it all!

Fired people return everything. I ran this scenario where you fire them before you sleep (using the . interface to hire new mercs) and during the inventory phase before you go out on the field and you can fire them there. I left Vinny doing repair work and loaded him up in every slot and took out Larry with me, also fully loaded up. I did the compress time and when day ended I fired them both using the scenarios I indicated. EVERYTHING including the 4 and 5 slot vests were returned from both guys.

So there you go. Be careful of the quitter but nothing to fear from firing them.

I had beat you to it for the quitters situation, but your info on fired mercs is useful, thanks.
This is a very annoying habit that was fortunately fixed in JA2. When mercs leave in JA2 they leave their gear behind in their last sector.
