Ive been trying to experiment with different groups of mercs, do any in particular cause a different effect when they talk? Im looking for them to talk/fight/whatever.
I don't remember JA having party banter but JA2 has some.

Try putting Bubba in a team with any dark skinned merc. (Blood, Magic, Ice, Dynamo)
Buns is a bit of a prude and can't stand Fox (centrefold)
Steriod (Polish) doesn't like Ivan and Igor (both Russian)
Razor hates Biff (his boss)

And there are many more combinations to discover but I leave that to you :)
In addition to gnarbrags comment, if you cant be bothered to discover all the possible love/hate relationships in the game, you can use the following love and Hate Maps that I picked up from The Bears Pit. :)

Friends tend to make "(my buddy) is awesome" type comments quite often.
Enemies will eventually shout insults at each other and can even start shooting each other too.

Solid lines = already friend/enemy
broken lines = start out ok, then become friends/enemies later as you play
