Chronic and frequent problems with this game!

Crash to Desktop about once every hour, always occurs during combat.
Reinstalling the game makes no difference.

Charachters frequently lose abilities. For example, they can crouch, or go
prone, but refuse to walk or run anywhere, or to fire a weapon. This is regardless of terrain. I found a "fix" for this---If I save the game, turn it off, then load the save, the charachter suddenly isn't "stuck" any more.

Frequently, once every 45 minutes of play, a stopwatch icon comes up on the screen, the second hand counts...and counts, and count, and counts. The stopwatch never leaves, and the game is for all intents and purposes, frozen.
Impossible to return to desktop, have to physically reboot (!) the computer in order to get things working again!

Keys I find on corpses or elsewhere appear to be utterly useless. They open nothing, no matter what I try.

Balance is off. I've got the game set at the easiest possible setting. Either things are so easy that you're stupified with boredom, or suddenly you're overwhelmed with an amush sort of situation with literally impossible odds.

A huge percentage of enemy soldiers appear to have some kind of "super armor" which I cannot obtain. When killed, this armor is never "on" the corpse, so cannot be claimed..

Evidently the Tixa prison lower level is going to require break lights or night vision goggles, which are in vanishingly short supply.

Finally able to buy grenades, and no matter how high a charachters dexterity or marksmanship skill, they bounce around at random, never going anywhere near where they are aimed.

Being on a roof, it's impossible to tell whether you are exposed to enemies on the ground. Extremely frequently, ground enemies can hit my rooftop mercs, while those same exact mercs cannot hit back, shot is "blocked"?!

Found two LAW, never find any ammo for them. Found grenade launcher, no decent ammo available.

Happens to me when i try to steal weapons frequently, beside that rarely. U can try to press CTRL+ENTER that sometimes helps. If it is in stopwatch mode normally u can still quit the game with ALT+X.

Keys and keycards are for places on the same map. For this reason if u right click them in inventory they tell from which sector they are. Keys in inventory are used automatically, maybe u just didn't noticed does they worked? U need to open the door with the MERC that has the key in his inventory.

Yeah.. happens become outnumbered... this is why many people prefer to fight at night. If u really have no chance to win, u can flee on the boarder of the map. Impacts moral negative.
Edit: A nasty habit would to break the travel afterwards and show up on a different place (same edge) of the map. ;)

Yeah after some time they are armored.. especially the elites. Throw away your hollow point ammunition (blue) u have bad chances dealing damage without many shots. White armor has some piercing capacity.. while armor piercing (red) has the best, but deals lower damage.
One nice thing about blue ammo and armored enemies is, does each hit.. even it deals no damage still steals stamina.. so after some shots they be knocked out.. the elites have better weapons and so u can steal them a bit easier.. assumed no other enemies are nearby ;)

My A Squad is a night fighting squad.. my IMP night expert.. so i never had problems.. use someone with night ops and night goggles as spotter. Luring them around corners could help too.
Edit: And remind UV goggles don't work underground and in caves.

Ballistics weapons (grenades and mortar) are better targeted with the red cross on the ground.
White cross.. where u aim to.. red cross.. prediction where your grenade should land..

They can hit your head.. while your gun points into the roof.. stand a bit more back from the edge.. squad low.. and move your stance high for shooting.. spotting.. getting interruptions... enemies next to the wall on low stance are very hard to spot and can often hit u.. so take care.
But roof sniping is powerful enough how it is ;)

The LAW is a one time usage weapon.. so no ammo.. later they can be ordered from bobby ray..
I didn't like the 40mm grenades too. The bigger range is not needed during night.. And the disadvantage (flexibility.. anyone can throw a nade) and slot/weight usage (especially for the talon which uses 2 critical weapon slots) didn't outweighs the advantage of its bigger range.

With the crashes lockups i cannot really help.. JA2 was always like this and rarely crashes/lockups. In rare cases (like enemies invading a sector) the game can crash every time.. and the only thing that helps is an older save or changing the circumstances (moving a MERC in the attacked sector and things like that). So never rely on a single savegame. Spread your saves and save frequently.

The game crashes every so often. It's from that Good Old Games time when we used to put up with it. I remember it happening when I bought the original.

Really though, listen to me. Corners, corners, corners. Hide around the corners! do not engage head on. Hide around the corner, AP ammo, head shot, have your men crouching round the corner, you should be able to take anyone down as they come around it. Occasionally (Mike especially), you get a merc that can actually get in there before you, but most of the time, they walk around the corner to their doom.

ALT - S I think to quick save, that should allow you to reload if you find you've got a bad position.

Anyway - Executor has given you a very comprehensive answer, I don't think anyone can tell you much more.

Just remember... Corners... around the corner... crouch around the corner... head shot... always fade out in a montage...

Usually a quick save & reload fixed such problems for me.

What happens to me often is does the ALT key got "stuck" when i ALT+TABBED to the desktop. Just hit the ALT key ingame if your MERCS all walk backwards.
I am a notorious ALT+TABBER ^^
I just started a new game. Its now asking for some Mercs to RELOAD after ONE SHOT. The merc SCOPE can only shoot once before it says gun emty.

You're probably playing v1.13 They changed the way some weapons behave. Bolt action rifles will now have to be "reloaded" after each shot.
No, its asking to reload the entire clip. Or is that what you are saying?

That's strange. What version are you using? Which gun and firing mode? I assume you're using full clips.
