Any idea if this release has proper controller support? XBox 360 controller for PC maybe?

Yes, it has. I've played it entirely through with Gamepad on PC.

The game supports Direct Input, not the newer Xinput, which means you may need to manually set the layout if you are using an Xbox pad.

Possibly an absurd question, but would it be possible to use an Xbox 360 controller if I was using Xpadder for keymapping? Or do the 360 gamepads just not work at all?

360pad works fine. The only problem I have is that the button labels are off. It simply says button 1,2,3,etc. in the menus and in game.
