hi, bought the game yesterday during the fall promo.
i posted this yesterday but it looks i forgot to mark it as a question/problem
can a mod please delete that post cause i really need help to be able to get it played on winxp

I started the game up and all looked okay (win XP sp3)

The funny part is this: no matter what resolution i choose i get a weird black block around my character, it is best described as a PNG that isn't transparent and thus showing black with in the centre the character

my system:

Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67GHz
4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 662MHz
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P7P55D LE (LGA1156)
IBM C170 CRT (1024x768@85Hz)
1024MB GeForce GTS 250

But i must admit this 'bug' flaw, or whatever it is , is strange, this way i cant see whats happening
The large block moves along with the character ...

I havent played with any settings yet, i just installed it yesterday and ran it without tinkering.
Other then that black block i havent seen any bugs, the only problem i also notice is high cpu usage
40% all the time, sometimes even more (on both windows versions), other then that i havent seen any problems yet cause i just started to play the game.

oddly enough win7 64bit HP doesnt have the problem (i expected far more problems with this windows)
so it will be a challenge to get it fixed on win xp
can someone help me please ?

Try to update your GPU drivers, you can also try to reinstall DirectX - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

Before trying anything else go to your graphics card control panel and restore the default values. It might be one of the graphic enhancement features that doesn't work properly. Default values are rather conservative.

thanks for the quick reply...

i just tried, when things fail i always reset and go back to the default settings.
I made a backup of the .ini files, i changed the ini files but nothing works, the black block stays.
i tried al available compatibility modes aswell... none of it worked.

However i did not try new gpu drivers/updates (like the one reply above suggested) because everything else works okay, never had any problem so i am afraid that doing so might disrupt the normal flow of my windows Xp.
So i rather have 1 game not working correctlky while my windows works fine then echange it to 1 working game and having general trouble with the rest of my applications and windows itself.

Its still weird that win7 is the one who hasn't got any troubles(as far is could see i only tested the game briefly under win7), i expected win7 the one to have problems, cause until now it does with 5 or 6 old gog games.

I started to google but i havent find any results that compare to mine: a black rectangle around the character.
I am afraid that i wont get it to work properly on winxp.

hi thanks for the fast reply

direct x you say?
i haven tried that cause i am very carefull with that cause my winxp always worked so i am kinda careful in getting updates.

i am looking now at the dxdiag tool, i guess it shows all the drivers and versions ?

okay i see loads of .dll info....
i never touch any of these
i did however diabled the AGP texture Accelaration ( i new on forehand that it would not help but i tried i anyway)
and it did not make a difference, the block stays.
Disabling the other 2 is no use cause then the game wont run, the game needs those.

heres some of the messy dll (microsoft likes to mess up)

Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3DX.dll: 9.04.0091.0000 English Final Retail 11/2/2014 17:03:43 2846720 bytes

Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3DX.dll: 9.12.0589.0000 English Final Retail 11/2/2014 17:04:01 578560 bytes

and tons more....

i googled on these names and there are many users who also had trouble and posted their info...
why in heaven does microsoft makes a mess with dll? why dont they clean up redundant stuff?

anyways.... i am afraid i will have to login win7 each time i want to play inquisitor, thas a hassle cause i mainly use xp cause it works prefect for me.

Until you haven't installed your DirectX before June 2010, it's exactly the version you're currently using, so no real need to re-install it, but it doesn't hurt either. If DirectX on your system is broken it'll fix it.
Newer graphic drivers could solve the problem though.

Someone with the same problem - http://www.gog.com/forum/inquisitor/black_squares_around_character
And it's probably better to leave it open until it's solved. ;)

thanks, i have just replied in his topic and explained i have the same thing on xp, since win7 doesnt have it it must be xp and nvidia that mess up things.
I just found an advice to set the ingame resolution to match your desktop resolution. Are these two settings the same on your computer? If not, delete the "d3dparams.ini" file in the "Documents\Inquisitor_SaveGames" folder, launch the game, and set a new ingame resolution. Also the refresh rate should be the same in the game and on your desktop. (The tip says to delete the whole "Inquisitor_SaveGames" folder but I think that is not necessary.)

Another tip says to launch the game in window first. To do that you must open the above mentioned "d3dparams.ini" file (if it doesn't exist in your "Inquisitor_SaveGames" folder yet, find its default version in the "GOG.com\Inquisitor\GameData" folder) and change "StartWindowed=0" to "StartWindowed=1".

As far as the first tip goes, it should probably be enough to open the "d3dparams.ini" file and change these values to match your desktop settings:
InitialScreenWidth=1024
InitialScreenHeight=768
MaxRefreshRate=100

gamesfreak64: I was talking about that new post by denisbill which clearly is a spam post as Pajama says but I just wanted to give him a fair chance to explain it. Anyway, the post has been reported as a spam and maybe when a moderator comes around to inspect he will mark your post as solved as well.

How about editing your own post and remove the spam from it? Thanks. Having trusted users propagate spam is worse then the generic spam accounts doing so. It's far more likely to stay around and be looked at.

That's a good point. The spam from my post has been removed.
