The game runs all interactions everywhere in runtime, for example if you are in alvaron the game will still run all interactions in glatzburg... now the problem is when a loop is formed where one group of npcs fights the other group and the map starts getting filled with corpses, the corpse count can become so high that the level starts to crash. this happened to me in the iron mines level, at the very last stage .. after defeating 2 archdemons, its been my second attempt at finishing the game.. and i think thats exactly the root cause in this case because every tine i returned to the level it was littered with more corpses and i got locked out for a few seconds it was a gradually worsening scenario and now it would just freeze indefinitely

That's an interesting piece of information I haven't read before. You may be right, but even if so I am afraid that there is no one left to do anything about it now because the development team disbanded a long time ago.
