This is not a dumb question. I don't know the 'normal' way.
But that's what I do and it works:
1. Make 'Thieving' skill active
2. Right-click somewhere to activate the Thieving skill.
3. The stealth wears off.
4. Cancel Thieving by hitting Esc.
5. Don't forget to make the 'Stealth' skill active again if you think you going to need it soon.
