You can try to configure the default wrapper, or try another one, e.g. dgVoodoo or nGlide.

Low framerate is usually because the starfield blur is turned on. Try turning that option off.

Thx, both, for the info. They must be using a bad hack for the starfield blur or something, like locking the screen.
I'll keep messing with this one but may try another wrapper if I'm not happy.
