I noticed that nVidia have released new beta drivers, and tucked away in the release notes is this interesting nugget:
Improves compatibility for older PC games (DirectX 7 to DirectX 9) running on Windows 7 (examples: Gothic, Gothic II, Falcon 4.0: Allied Force, Links 2003, Independence War II - Edge of Chaos, and X2: Wolverine's Revenge).

I've not tried this as I'm at work, but we may well have a fix!
Windows 7 Drivers here:

64-bit - http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-260.63-beta-driver.html
Hmm. Didn't seem to make any difference to me.
Thanks very much Ravenger! EoC works great for me now (driver version 260.63).

Still in Vista compatibility mode, not sure if this is needed or not.
Runs at 1920x1080x32-bit, all options at max including shader. Note that I've only tried a few minutes of it though, not sure if there's problems in the future.

Previously I had to run at 16-bit with Shader at low. (driver version 257.21)

Specs:
Windows 7 64-bit with nVidia GTX260

That's great news! I'll have to give it another go.
Yep. New Drivers have fixed the graphical problems for me. Now at max settings (Full Shader Detail + Star Field etc). It was completely unplayable at any setting before these for me.
Works fine for me too, Windows 7 64bit :-D
Also works for me. Great find Ravenger.

Did you end up getting it to work for you?

Karl
Not tried it yet. I'm wondering if the nVidia fix might be specific to the GOG version. I've used my original disc copy. I should really get around to getting the GOG version.
GOG should just gift it to you, not that it costs much but would be a nice gesture :)

This worked for me, I have the original retail version.
Just re-installed the game and it works!

Nice work nVidia!
