THIS GAME LOOKS SO AWESOME! The story premice is great, the look and feel of flying in space coupled with delicious space music atmospherics is just super immersive. I WANT TO PLAY IT!

Then you get to your first battle and get killed in 5 secs like a chump. I don't even know what I could have done, I ran to the internet to figure out how to be good at this game, I just can't!

Then you realize there is no real autosave and you only get to save your game at you base, 20 minutes ago. So you travel these millions of kilometers and unskipable cut scene again and again to get back to the action.

I'm not giving up... get killed 10 more times...

I eventually miraculously win the first tutorial battle, don't ask me how. Only to get killed at the second in the junkyard, millions of kilometers away.

And yeah it didn't auto save after that first battle so you gotta do it all again from the start. Thats a couple hours of investment lost. You can only save at your base so there is bound to be a LOT of back and forth to play it safe.

I love the game so much, it's the type of sci fi shooter I wanted right now. But (as far as I know) impossible battle mixed with the bare minimum of a saving system results in me making very little progress in many hours (only got to the second mission) and being very, very sad. And I'm a Dark Souls junky so difficulty should not turn me down...

I just don't get it... if someone could explain... is there a mod to support save games at any time from the pause menu? Or more intelligent difficulty setting? I want to play this so bad...

Ah, so you are talking about Independence War 2. Took me a bit to figure that out. Anyway, did you install the mods that are available under i-war2.com (i-war2 . com / downloads.htm)? If so, you should have a manual countermeasures launcher that works better than the automatic one and should help you to dodge missiles more effectively. The mods you are looking for are MultiMod, MultiMod Counter Measures and MultiMod Location Finder.

Also, I encourage you to watch Let's Plays. There aren't many on YT, but those few should help you understand the game mechanics. It does take a while to get into, because Newtonian spaceflight takes a lot of skill - but it's eminently more rewarding than just another old Wing Commander clone.

Third, you shouldn't be afraid to run. If you have a pack of enemies trailing you, just kick in LDS and get some distance. Do accelerate over the pre-set number (750 m/s, I believe), as that will help you dodge enemies and their missiles, too.

Forth, go back to base as often as possible. Yes, this is annoying as hell, but there is just no other way. Blame the devs for that.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
It takes practise to learn to fly and shoot well. Remember to move in all directions. I remember seeing some advice in here somewhere. If you choose the base and activate the docking auto-pilot you will get there much faster. For me at least game crashes automatically if i stay out for 2½h, one more reason to go to base every so often.
Yeah the first mission is a tough one, though mods aren't needed IMO, just use all the controls at your disposal, thrustoveride, strafing controls and make sure you maintain a decent speed while manuevering.
You might even want to turn off the flightassist and try shooting the missiles with your quad PBC flying backwards or go directly after the enemies.
In retrospect the biggest issue I think is that the thruster overrides and lateral thrusters weren't given a separate tutorial. These are absolutely the key to winning battles.

The first major fight you get into in the game takes place near a station inside the traffic control radius, so your speed is limited making you an easy target. Only by using the thruster overrides and lateral thrusters can you break that limit, which isn't always apparent to new players.
Start with this thread: http://www.gog.com/forum/independence_war_series/combat_tips

Then get your keyboard and joystick reference card here: http://www.gog.com/forum/independence_war_series/reference_card Edit: more specifically, here: http://www.gog.com/forum/independence_war_series/reference_card/post16

Later, you might want some hints on playing the pirate role, so you get some suggestions here: http://www.gog.com/forum/independence_war_series/i_war_2_pirating_candidates

Edit: as others mentioned, thruster override is an important feature for combat, so get used to using it. I typically use flight assist while others swear by pure Newtonian. You can get some interesting results if you mix the two in the middle of combat (see the ref card for the key command to toggle it).

Missiles are going to be your first problem since they like to throw them at you right away: point your nose toward the enemy (and the missiles), use sideways thrust, and switch to your quad-light PBCs for use as missile defense. The sideways thrust will help you dodge missiles periodically and will also force the missiles to turn, which allows you to see their travel path (those red lines) as they head toward you - otherwise they're near impossible to see. The quad-lights have a great RoF to allow you to throw a boatload of particle death at the incoming missiles. You won't hit all of them but should be able to kill / dodge enough to make it a fair fight.

Also, don't forget to run away if you need to give your shields time to recharge. Thruster override is good for that, too.

Spot on OP.
Don't know what the game developers were thinking but at the board room meeting it must have been "how can we lose money on sales by frustrating the living hell out of everyone?"

Then someone put up their hand with that first mission idea.

LOL an absolute classic this game IF IT HAD GAME BALANCE!

What GAME MECHANICS?

That first mission you are killed within a nano second. You don't have any time to even think about the physics of your ship or weapons/counter measure because you are toast by that time.

This game has all the makings of a classic, then they out the difficulty level up to einstein /Frank Zappa levels so only 2 p;layers can play it (Einstein and Zappa).

You can have all the best graphics( actually bought this on release and was having a better time only because i must have got a full house on that first mission because that first mission is like playing the lottery), atmosphere, sound ,hype but game balance is the one and only thing that sorts the champs from the chumps.

This game had all the makings of a champ but that first mission and subsequent missions relegate it to chump status.

I couldn't use the override in that first mission!

Man, frustrating is not a word to describe that mission.

RAGE!
