So I've been trying to get this to work for win7 x64 for a week now. I love this game, and really want to play it again- haven't in years.

First, I torrented it (I've bought it three different times throughout my life XD) and the install went smoothly, but when I fired the game up it insta-crashed with the dreaded "Icewind Dale has stopped working" message.

Naturally, I googled for some possible solutions. I came upon these forums, as well as some Icewind fansites, and tried TONS of different things:

-Updated my drivers
-I installed outside the /programs and/or x86 directory
-Ran as administrator
-XP Compatibility mode
-Tried every possible combination in .exe properties
-Tried every possible Icewind config display combination
-Did everything gog.com suggests
-Downloaded "Compatibility Administrator," mentioned here somewhere, a neat tool for administering different compatibility variables, tried a lot with it, but nothing worked.

Having trolled around gog.com for the last week, unsuccessful and frustrated (and Dale-less) I decided to make my first purchase here, and bought Icewind Dale Complete.

Edit: I did completely remove all previously installed Icewind Dale stuff before installing the gog.com copy

"You're basically paying for them to make these games compatible with newer tech" is what I've been reading around here. Exactly what I needed, and only 10 dollars?

Well, I was damned excited to finally start playing this timeless game. I figured after shelling out 10 bucks, I'd be able to play the game hassle-free on Win7, since that's exactly what I'm paying for.

Thing is, I'm at the exact same point I was when I had the game for free. Same set of files (+gog files), same insta-crash. I'm STILL searching for a solution to the same exact problem, but now I'm 10 dollars poorer...

What's even more frustrating for me is seeing all the other Win7 users here get simple fixes, like just changing to 600x480 or enabling OpenGL, or just running in WinXP compatibility. I don't get it.

Please forgive my ire, and my rant. I don't care about the money really, I'm just pissed because I miss this game, and can't have it.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, I'm at my wit's end.

Here's what worked for me (I'm on Win7 Pro x64):

Ran the installer as admin.
Installed to a different directory than Programsx86 (I actually installed under Program Files->Games, but my games folder is actually on another drive and simlinked to Programs)
Set compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 and set to Run as Administrator in the Properties tab.
When I fire up the game, I still right-click and run as admin (just force of habit).

***Of note, I also installed the IWD Unfinished Business mod, the Tweak mod, and the Widescreen mod.

No issues.

If you've tried that, or do try it, and it still doesn't work, then the only other thing I can think of is turn off your Antivirus when you install the game, and turn of UAC.

Hope you get it running, It's one of my favorites as well, so I sympathize with your frustration.

Also adding that I tried everything on that list AFTER I bought the game from gog.com as well.

I also tried disabling triple buffering and Vsync in my Nvidia settings, some people said that helped, but no cigar there either.

I'm probably just gonna cut my losses. gog.com doesn't actually provide the service they say they do. Still trying to figure out what my 10 bucks was for.

ry4444n: [...]
Providing OS information is usually not enough.

What GPU do you have? Which (number) drivers exactly?
Do you have any non-default codecs installed? (crash could be caused by intro movie unable to play)
Do you have latest (June) DirectX9 installed? (alongside DX10/11)
nvidia geforce gtx 460, latest drivers installed

no extra codecs installed

yes, gog.com suggests i install that directx, so i did.

like i said, i did everything. this is simply not worth my time anymore. i shouldn't have to answer these questions, or continue looking for a fix to the problem i PAID gog.com to solve for me.

this was an utterly disappointing experience, but im over it. i might check this thread a few more times but for the most part im done with this bogus service. i highly doubt anyone will be able to offer helpful advice, considering the Icewind forum is saturated with threads just like this one. I'd love for someone to prove me wrong though.

bye gog.com, thanks for nothing
That sucks, man. I don't have any other ideas for you.

But I wouldn't lay all the blame on GOG. Since tons of us have it working on a 64 bit Win7 system, there has to be something obscure on your machine that's interfering. Not trying to start an argument but there isn't a game in the world that doesn't have problems on someone's machine. So I don't think it's entirely fair to spread around that GOG doesn't provide the service they say they do.

One last thing though: have you tried contacting GOG to see if they'll maybe refund your purchase? Long shot, and I doubt they'll do it, but you never know.

*edit* Hey, have you tried the nvidia fix? Might be worth a look.

Follw this link below download the compatibility maganger and make sure you follow the steps properly.....im running BG1 - BG2 , IWD1 - IWD2 perfectly by following the same steps with the direct draw option...i spent 6 hours last night trying alot of funky shit including downloading virtual XP which took a couple of hours. This fixed it and it WILL fix it for you if you make sure everything on your computer is up to date including directx and graphics card and service packs.

here is the post

"I'm playing under Vista, and have the same problem with an ATi 4850, and I used this trick under XP for other games too. But another solution is possible (very useful under Vista / 7, though it may help with XP too, maybe with better performances) :

Download the Microsoft Application compatibility toolkit, and then launch the Compatibility Administrator (in Admin mode). Right-click on New Database in the list, Create New Application Fix, fill the first part, uncheck Windows compatibilities ("None") in the second. Then search for "ForceDirectDrawEmulation" and tick it. Skip the last part, close the window. Then save the database somewhere (preferably at the root of the game's directory), then right-click on the barrel (or go to File [...]) and Install it. You can eventually close everything.

From now on, the game should run with forced DDraw, without changing the general 3D parameters. And from what I saw on Planescape, and now IWD2, everything runs smoothly (a steady 30 fps). I hope it will help ! (it may also help with on-screen artifacts, or others bugs, even more if coupled with D3D Windower). " If this doesnt fix it your doing something wrong cause its direct draw that fucks up your installation.

I have the same problem. I followed the infor for the compatibility update and it worked great on IWD2, but no lluck in IWD. When I try to start new game it immediately minimizes the window and blacks it out with no sound. Eventually i get the "not rersponding" message and have to close the whole thing. Maybe i am still missing something?
Hi i had problem running Icewind Dale 1 on windows7 too. Game crashed everytime i clicked Create Game.
I tried different compatibility opinions. At the end Win Xp service pack 2 with administration rights solved the problem for me. Try this combination if you haven`t already.
Good luck.

I got similar problems when trying to launch. Finally I ran the setup-ddrawfix.exe file found in the game's installation folder and choose Force DirectDraw Emulation. It works for me.
