Is Icewind Dale worth it if i liked Planescape:Torment and Baldur's Gate 1&2?
Definitely yes.
Definitely.

Planescape is very heavily story-driven and it's combat is not particularly deep or tactically challenging.

Baldur's Gate is in the middle with a good mix of both story and combat.

And then Icewind Dale is at the other side of the spectrum: VERY heavily emphasis on tactical combat with just enough story to keep things moving.

Another key difference in Icewind Dale is that you create your entire party at the beginning. There are no NPC companions and there is no "main character". But you get to build your own 6-member "dream team" of characters and customize them exactly how you like.

What Ryan says, yeah. :) The 3 different series are all similar enough that if you liked one, you'll probably like the others, though there are differences. Where Planescape: Torment is the story-driven and roleplaying heavy sibling, and the BG series is the middle of the road, the IWD series is much more heavily focused on dungeon crawling and setting up the "ideal party". Don't get me wrong though, there IS enough of a story to keep you hooked and going through the game, if you're like me and need a good plot to hook you in. But there isn't any party banter or interactions since you create the 6-member party entirely by yourself.
BTW, i have heard that Icewind Dale 2's source code has been lost, and as such they can't make an enhanced edition. Is the game still playable? I am definitely buying ID1 once i have saved money but i am not sure about 2

IWD 2 is more of the same great game as IWD 1. I havent had any issues with the GOG version on my computer. IDK about the whole source code being lost so I cant comment on that, but if you have enjoyed the other Infinity Engine games, youre gonna like IWD 1 and 2.
Both IWD games are for those who get tired of reading the sheets of texts and dialogs and want to fight more often than doing anything else.

I even saw the 'pausable party-based Diablo' description of IWDs. It has some sense though.
Probably IWD saga is nearly my favourite in the BG Engine. I like the art direction a lot, the mood and ambience and the Dungeon Crawling approach compared with ts brothers and sisters. Sadly the design is strongly linear in both titles.

I know I'm replying to a 3 month old post here but I just had to add linearity in and of itself isn't a bad thing. The only BG engine game that can really be considered open world is BG1.

Besides, IWD is all about the combat, there's really nothing to explore so and open world here would be pointless
I have to add that IWD1 >> IWD2, both in terms of design and plot. Somehow, IWD2 has a lot of small maps, some annoying puzzle, and not particularly convincing antagonists.

In my opinion it's the other way - IWD2 is better due to puzzles (Fell Wood welcome to!), plot, maps (open terrain!) and antagonists.
IDW1 had great music and atmosphere. Play it on a cold snowy winter evening for maximum effect lol.

But I did miss having NPC companions. They were one of my favorite parts of the BG series and PST.

If I were to ever play IDW again, I would consider installing the mod "Icewind Dale NPCs", which is found here on the Pocket Plane Group website.

It is highly recommended if you like having NPC companions. I think it'd spice up the IWD experience.

You can also play it on a hot summer evening to cool down yourself a little. ;)
