Windows 7 just displays an error message saying that IWD has stopped working. Tried all the different Config options, and setting compatibility to Windows XP. I've also successfully played other Infinity Engine games on this computer. Any ideas?

EDIT: I tried Icewind Dale 2 Complete as well, just to test. It has the same problem.

This is pretty Weird cause i could run both on my Laptop last Year and Years before and now both dont work.
Read the whole Day through Forums but nothing i read there helped,from Deleting Dll to install Compatibility Tool and so on.

I have contacted support. So far none of their suggestions have fixed the problem but I'm still holding out hope!

Icewind Dale needs the DirectPlay Component for Windows 7 and above. Enable the Component with the following Guide:

Windows Settings, Programs and Featues, Turn Windows features on or off (on the right corner), check "DirectPlay" under "Legacy Components", reboot windows and start Icewind Dale

I have seen this solution mentioned in other threads, but I don't seem to have 'Legacy Components' in my 'Turn Windows features on and off' menu.

Windows 7 does not have it. It's only on Windows 10.

So Visimar is wrong? Or is there a way to enable DirectPlay on Windows 7?

You don't need to enable it in Windows 7, you just need to install DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft.

Then that isn't your problem, something else on your system is causing the game to quit. Prime candidates are security programs like antivirus.

I tried running the game's executable in Visual Studio and stepping through the assembly code and I noticed that the game crashed after some NVIDIA DLLs were loaded. So, as an experiment, I uninstalled my current NVIDIA graphics driver and installed a very old one (years old) that came on a disc with my computer. And both Icewind Dale games worked!

So I guess it is safe to assume that the problem is an incompatibility between the games and the way recent NVIDIA drivers handle those legacy components. However, since I obviously don't want to keep using old drivers, no practical solution is forthcoming.

Does the Intel integrated graphics hardware support Pixel Shader 2 (i.e., DirectX 9c)? Unless there is a modern software fix to drivers, if you have an integrated graphics system then 9.0c is a deal-breaker.
