I've attempted to install and reinstall ID1 twice now, and both times I have had the same result: upon starting the game, I can hear the audio playing as normal and the game clearly responds to my keyboard inputs since I can hear myself skipping the opening company logos, but I cannot see anything. The game completely kills my monitor, not even allowing me to see anything if I attempt ALT/TAB or CTRL/ALT/DEL. When I 'reset' my computer (read as disconnect and reconnect the power cord, the only option I have left) everything is back to normal.

I have tried all of the tricks mentioned on the forums (running as admin, reinstalling as admin, compatibility mode) but nothing seems to fix the problem. I very much want to play this game again but I have no idea how to fix the problem! Please help!

I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic.

Have you installed the June 2010 DirectX package http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
Don't do the web update as it will most likely miss files, as I found out trying to get NWN running on my win 7 box

Graphics card driver another possibility, I see you're running Vista Home Basic, but no mention of your graphics card.

Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 3400 Series

I also have DirectX 11.

ATI site states your card only supports DirectX 10.1 ....regardless some older games need the files from the DX 9 - 10 package to run, the June package includes those files not necessarily included in DX 11

Although I have win 7 and DX 11 with a graphics card (ATI HD 7870) that supports DX 11.1, I still had to download the June 2010 package to get NWN to run properly.

Alright, I have the file. Now the only question is where to extract it to. I've never seen a DirectX installer quite like this one before.

Just run the installer as you would any other downloaded application, windows will only install what is missing from your DX 11 install

I'm not sure I have the right installer, then. I open it up, and it asks me what folder I would like to extract my files to. There is nothing in the text box, meaning I'd need to browse for the folder.

Apologies, you are correct, I just run the process again to check
When you get the text box, you do need to specify a folder to extract to, in my case I went with browsing to my downloads folder and clicking that, the text box will auto fill with the path C:\Users\USERNAME\Downloads then after downloads add \folder name.

ie: C:\Users\USERNAME\Downloads\DX

When all files have extracted to the new folder open it up and there youl will find DXSETUP double click install.

I found some other info this morning that may help as well if the DX install doesn't sort the problem out
also applies to other Infinity Engine games.

I'll note that he says not to worry about updating DX, I found though the June 2010 package of DX can help.
Also in the guide check the option - Display Quest Experience I found on my system this to create a bug with the game window being to the far right of the screen and half cut off.

That guide gave me an answer I didn't expect. I set the game to run in Windowed mode through the configuration utility, and it works like a dream now! :) Many thanks for your help!
