I'm playing IWD on a netbook and it seems to be running a bit slow. It's definitely playable, but everything seems a tiny bit slow-motion, and the response of characters when you click for them to do something is a bit slow. My computer is 1.6ghz so I'm assuming there should be no slow down. I haven't played any other Infinity engine games on this computer yet, so my memories of how fast e.g. BG2 ran in the past may be wrong. It just seems like all of the animations are slightly in slow motion and the scrolling across the screen and movement of the pointer are not as quick and sharp as I would have expected from a game this old and graphically undemanding. I've set my frame rates to the highest level in the config and it doesn't seem to do much. Any ideas what could be causing this slowdown? Any tweaks I could try to speed/sharpen things up a bit? Or am I just seeing things and the game is meant to run at this speed?

I was getting annoyed at this too. Open the configuration tool under your gog startup menu tab, go to icewind dale and select the config button. On this screen, you can adjust the game settings for your computer. Go to graphics and increase the FPS. It's set at 30, but you can go up to 60. 60 was kind of too fast for me, so I set it at 45. Now they don't move in slow-mo. I run an ancient laptop, so I doubt you'll have any issues increasing the FPS. This should take care of your problem.
Toggle Software Mirror BLT in the graphics preferences. This helped me a lot.
Having similar problems here, mostly with the mouse.. mouse movement in game is jerky and inconsistent. I've tried both ideas listed above (software mirror blt, and increasing the fps thru config), but neither has made any difference... the game itself runs fairly smooth, but fighting with the mouse every step of the way is killing me.. it works fine on the title screen and in vista, just not in game... ideas?
I've also tried both the suggestions (the software mirror blt) and have set my fps to 60 with no noticeable difference. I can't see it being a problem with my computer since I can play other more demanding games (e.g. Gothic) without a problem. I was really looking forward to playing this but it's no fun when your whole party moves like they are suffering from some permanent slow spell. I remember having problems with BG 2 on another computer and having to manually set the affinity and I've made sure to do that, so that isn't the problem. I really hope somebody can help me sort out this problem.

You can also open your icewind.ini file and change the line "3D Acceleration=0" to "3D Acceleration=1", which should result in smoother performance and some slightly improved visuals.
A question about the 3d acceleration settings: I tried turning on 3d acceleration in the config program, but for some reason it made the game appear upside down. I'm assuming changing it in the icewind.ini does the same thing. Is that the case? If so, any ideas what might be causing the upside down image?

I didn't use the config program, you might want to make sure the setting is actually enabled in the icewind.ini file. I haven't seen anyone else on this forum mention it so far, so I'm not sure anyone can back me up, but I didn't run into any problems. You might want to make sure that sprite mirroring is turned off, though I'm not sure it's related.

Just checked this... enabling 3d acceleration in the config program does change the setting in the ini file... it seems to have the same effect. Enabling 3d acceleration didn't resolve my problem, and didn't seem to help Bokaj, but thanks for the suggestion.. still trying things to get the game running better and make it more enjoyable.
Enable OpenGL for the spell effects in Icewind Dale config?
Does your computer use and intel based graphics provider?
I'm having similar problems with BG 2 (uses the same engine as Icewind Dale)--the mouse icon (gloved hand) keeps fading in and out, and when I press TAB or pause the game (or even save the game) I have significant lag. Anyone got solutions? I too have followed the FPS etc solutions so far.
In case anyone's interested, I found the solution for me (I am using Windows 7 Ultimate):

Run the "Config" as Administrator (right-click the program shortcut, select "Run as Administrator") and make your changes.

I run the game itself in Administrator mode as well, and also using Compatibility mode with Windows XP Service Pack 2. All these options are found by right-clicking the program shortcut and selecting 'properties', then going to the 'Compatibility' tab.

Game runs buttery smooth for me now, with 3D, all effects enabled, pathing at 60000, and AI updates at 45. It's kind of a joke, because although my laptop is something like 3 or 4 years old I can run Dragon Age: Origins on it, and Neverwinter Nights without a hitch, so it's not like it's a real performance issue. It's your OS getting in the way of a perfectly good game ;)
None of the above answers helped me. It's connected to some driver update for nvidia I believe. As everything was fine, then after one update it started going slow. Turning of OpenGL acceleration in iwdconfig makes the game go at a normal speed, however some things look... Messy. Fog of war for instance which is frustrating. :/
Someone screwed something up.

The game visibly slows down even in the menu when OpenGL turned on.

There's a few things you can do.

If you're on Windows XP, turn off hardware acceleration in the DirectX diagnostic utility (Start > Run >dxdiag). If you have Vista or 7, you'll need to follow the instructions here to set things up using the Compatibility Administrator: http://www.shsforums.net/topic/43616-how-to-deal-with-the-ddraw-problems-of-pst-and-other-ie-games/

Also, if you have messed up fog of war, be sure that you're running at 16 bit colour and that software mirror BLT is turned on.

Not sure why OpenGL doesn't work for you, except that maybe you need to update your video drivers or you have a lower-end system. You'll miss out on some nicer-looking fog of war and spell effects without running using OpenGL as well.
