I played IWD many years ago, after BG1, and found it perfectly fine, on whatever difficulty setting was default, I think. Certainly it included AOE damaging your own people. It was a good bit more combat focussed than BG1, but not remotely unfair. Now I see lots of reviews whinging about how hard / unfair it is. Have Beamdog actually broken the game balance at ''core rules' or whatever a normal challenge level is in the EE version? Or is this people complaining about 'the dice' beating them because they are used to ARPGs and haven't worked out that D&D depends on the Character's stats, not the players awesome reflexes in combat?

I do seem to remember that rushing headlong into a mob was not a particularly good strategy, but then, when was it ever?

Actually, from what I've read around, the EE makes everything too easy by adding BG kits. That's why I ended up playing the original Complete Edition instead of it (it comes for free with the EE, you just have to go to your library from the website - not Galaxy - click on IWD Enhanced > More > Serial Keys and redeem the key).
I found the game quite tough but never unbeatable. I know it's kinda cliché to say this, but it does have a bit of a Dark Souls vibe in the way it handles difficulty.
The EE also ignores the iron crisis and you can buy magical weapons cheaply.

The one and only good thing I saw about the EE is that you can switch between 1H and 2H weapons without unequipping the shield. I played until reaching Beregost, uninstalled and installed the classic version instead.
