Greets,

I bought this game couple of days ago and gotta say I'm plasantly surprised how smooth it works on modern machine - no technical problems so far. I also find out this edtion uses the second edition infinity engine graphic. In other words, it looks like BG2. I wonder how is that possible? As far as I know the conversions to bg2 engine "IWD in BG2" and IWD tutu are still in beta. Or is this some sort of "lite" conversion? Thing is I like dual weilding two weapons. I know its cliche and not "old school" and all that but can't help it. Since the game is using bg2/iwd2 graphic, shouldnt it have the necessary animations to support dual weild? Yet I can't seem to be able to equip second weapon...

Any ideas?

You can't. Not sure if it's an actually engine limitation or not, but you cannot equip dual weapons in IWD.

*edit* Actually, IIRC, the graphics engine was updated in IWD, but very little (if any) of the underlying mechanics).

This was made with the same engine as BG and BG2, the Infinity Engine. IWD1 (which is what I assume you are talking about) was made before BG2, and thus had no real dual wielding.

The developers implemented a fake dual-wielding system which only Rangers can take advantage of. If a ranger has a one-handed weapon equipped with no shield equipped, s/he gets an extra attack per round to simulate having a second weapon.

Is there a penalty to the attacks?
When the ranger's shield slot is empty you get an extra melee attack per round without any penalty.

HoW was created after BG2:SoA and updated the IWD engine. Therefore you have superior graphics and can even highlight items (which you couldn't do in BG2 without ToB).

Thanks for the answer. Time to make my Ranger more offensive. :)
thanks for answers everyone. I didnt know HoW updated the engine. First time I played IWD was before HoW even cae out and I clearly remember the old character animations that were same as in unmodded BG1 Oh well, time to reorganize party.
Your mileage may vary, but I found out I liked the original IWD campaign more compelling without the HOW addendums (lots of items basically). For one oblivious of PnP like me, the scarcity of items evoked survival horror. That and never coming back to Kuldahar in between a zone (bring a load of consumables).
The Ranger's special ability, which is getting an extra attack if not using a shield, also applies to two handed weapons. Add the fact that two-handed weapons have an extended reach and your ranger can happily crave up enemies safely behind your tank, when he's not turning them into pincushions with his bow.
