From the 2 reviews I read I get the impression that he answer to this is "yes" but clarification never hurts. Can we (as PC players) freely save the game or is it checkpoint/autosave only? Thanks in advance.
You can't save freely in this game. In order to save you need to walk or fast travel to any campfire. Those are spread all over the map.

Also if I'm not mistaken the game is autosaving when you progress the quests.

Thank you!
Campfires are save points. Really good way to encourage exploration and theyre so plentiful that you can save and exit whenever you want too. Im legit visiting them all and sightseeing along the way.

It's very useful/important to get the golden travel pack early, to have unlimited fast travel between camp fires. You need to hunt foxes for that, which can easily be done in the hunting grounds which you come across early in the game. But sometimes you also find foxes along the way.
I love the way campfires are plentyfull, yet sometimes you'll still find yourself with some nice loot or had a great hunt, and then on the way to saving your spoils might run into unexpected dangers...
