NoiseSupermot: I had this same problem, but none of the fixes in the thread worked for me. The option that seemed to fix it was using the command line option:
/heap 1073741824
Which sets the amount of RAM the game can use to 1GB (instead of a smaller amount which is default). It seems that explosions cause a problem with RAM allocation or something like that. To anyone having this issue, try the option above!
Thank you for this post! It helped in my case (I'm playing the Steam version, with Community/Fan Patch 2.3 installed though).

haydenaurion: Same problem here, it crashes in the first mission whenever I destroy a ship. Strangely it didn't crash in the training tutorial mission at all before, but now it's even crashing there. Not sure what's changed to make it do that.
Same issue here except it starts at mission 2 for me. Each time it crashes it creates a .dmp file in the hw1 classic>exe folder.

This helped for a while, but after the enemy carrier arrives it crashes again.

FFS why does nothing work that I buy from here.
It's even a crap shoot if it will even boot now even after using the verify/repair thing in galaxy. WTF.

atheist.org: IMPORTANT: Game will override these registry settings on launch so AFTER editing this 3 lines make sure you right click on "Homeword" folder in registry and edit premissions for admin/system/user so there is only "READ" checked. Uncheck any FULL CONTROL or If you can't uncheck it, block/deny it with checkbox on the right column.
It's not letting me edit the permissions, any ideas?

I can deny but then it denies reading too.

Edit: Either way it didn't help, it just went from showing a 50% of screen size window which closes after 10 secs, to a 25% one.
