Returners: Is this supported? Thanks in advance.

Open your dosboxHOMM1.conf file with notepad and change fullscreen=true to false.
Edit: And if you play through network, change also the same line in client & server .conf files.

I am currently trying to run HOMM3 on vista in windowed mode. I have tried looking for dosboxhomm1.conf and cannot seem to locate the file. I have also tried alt-enter as well as running homm3.exe -w
None of these solutions will play homm3 in a window.
Can anyone help further with this problem?

Hehe - Bolded :p
Homm3 is a windows game, haven't found a reliable method of putting it in Windowed mode. The DOSBox configuration file tweak will only work for HOMM 1 (and maybe 2?).
Windowed mode for HoMM3 is allowed when you set your desktop color depth to 16-bit and then in game either press F4 or Alt + Enter. It has been mentioned several times in other threads.
And yes, the DOSBox configuration file has nothing to do with HoMM3.

Doh! I need to pay more attention.
Here's specific instructions for HoMM3 windowed mode on Windows 7 (probably the same for Vista as well):

Right-click on the desktop --> Left-click "Screen Resolution" --> Left-click "Advanced settings" --> Left-click "Monitor" tab --> Under "Colors:", Select "High Color (16 bit)" --> Choose "Apply" button --> Launch the game --> Press the F4 key on your keyboard

Thanks for the detailed instruction, much appreciated.
Thanks. But I realize now it's not the best solution.

I've just found about the "HoMM 3 HD" mod and it's a MUCH better solution for this game in windowed mode. It allows the game to enter windowed mode without the hassle of changing your desktop settings. Also, you can resize the window with this mod. I tested the latest version of the mod (HoMM3 HD 3.35f) on Windows7 and it works great.

It won't allow me to post a link here, however, the site link can be found on google and the site's url ends in...

I make no claim as to whether or not it works; I just thought I'd post the link.
