Incubuspawn: I have never touched an UBI might and magic game. Is homm5/6 going to make a fan of 1-4 happy?
I think so. 5 is heavily influenced by 3, and feels like 3 but in 3D. I thought it was pretty great, but I played with all the expansions a few years after it came out.

(Which, to be fair, is how the majority of GOGs are released)

No opinion on 6, but the demo didn't make me hate it.

rbwilliams: I don't think it's quite old enough.

Though Witcher 2 is on here...maybe just because of the deal with CDProjekt. But HoMM5 isn't really an old game.
The "Letter to Santa" shows that they want newer games in the future. Read this: http://www.gog.com/en/news/letter_to_santa
and
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/11/17/good-new-games-gog-is-changing/

They want to also include games that are less than 3 years old, but HoMM5 is 3 years old, so it should be no problem if only they can get it DRM-free.

Don't know about HoMM 6 (and never will as long as it has such draconian DRM), but both HoMM 5 and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic were excellent games despite (?) being published by Ubisoft.
When GOG brings it, I'm buying it.

Actually IIRC the Conflux crap is just optional. While playing offline, you won't get access to dynasty weapons, but it matters not because older Heroes games didn't have them either and they did just fine without them. Also the lack of achievements while playing offline will be a problem only if you are an achievement whore.

And the DRM is only a one-time activation, or at least that is what Jewbisoft claims. But if you don't like bugged games, feel free to avoid MMH6 for now (or until the devs become more competent).
Heroes of Might and Maigc 5 is already DRM free. I bought the boxed version of it some time ago, where it included all it's expansions. It's the North American version, and it's completely DRM free. So the game is already free of any DRM.

I think the combat in 5 is okay, but I hate the look of the game. They borrowed creatures from other sources, not to mention all the horses the heroes ride on were gone, replaced by other creatures. Didn't have the look of the olde games at all to me.

I wouldn't buy it again, since I already have it DRM free and all patched up and all that. Of course, they did put Crusaders of Might and Magic on this internet site, so why not 5 too.
My boxed version had DRM but the final patched removed it (1.6 maybe). Now it is DRM free for Tribes of the East and Vanilla, but Hammers of Fate still needs the CD. Is there something (legal) you can do the get HOF to not request the CD?
