I'm in the process of going through all of the Might and Magic / Heroes games in chronological order. So far the only ones whose timeline placement I'm unsure about are the "Heroes Chronicles" games? Does anyone know?

Well all the chronicle games take place between the end of the H3 Shadow of Death and H4 when the world ends.

The opening video for H4 also makes mention of Armageddons Blade and the Sword of Frost clashing in an epic battle that brings about the destruction of the Old (H3) world.

As for the specific order of each of the chronicles I am not sure as I have not played them all. Really Chronicles is just a bunch of loose Heroes 3 addon Campaigns produced just to get money. The game does not even have a random map generator or single scenarios available for play.

According to my notes the chronological order for all the M&M and HoMM games is like this:

Might and Magic I: Secret of the Inner Sanctum
Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World
Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra
Might and Magic IV-V: World of Xeen (finish Cloudside before Darkside)
Heroes Chronicles: Warlord of the Wasteland
Heroes Chronicles: Conquest of the Underworld
Heroes Chronicles: Revolt of the Beastmasters
Heroes Chronicles: Master of the Elements
Heroes Chronicles: The World Tree
Heroes Chronicles: The Fiery Moon
Heroes of Might and Magic I
Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars
Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death
Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven
(Foolhardy Waywardness campaign from Armageddon's Blade)
Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia
Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor
Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade (except last campaign, see above)
Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer
Heroes Chronicles: Clash of the Dragons
Heroes Chronicles: The Sword of Frost
Heroes of Might and Magic IV
Might and Magic IX: Writ of Fate

The first of the Chronicles takes places about 1200-1300 years before the "current" time, when Bracada was a ruthless empire named Bracaduun.

+1. I'm not the original poster of this topic but I want to thank You for this list! :-)
Petrus is mostly right, but I believe the first six Heroes Chronicles chapters take place before Might and Magic I to V since characters from Might and Magic III are encountered later in the series, so the first five games must be closer to Heroes Of Might and Magic I chronologically.

Don't mix Heroes V into this, that's a reboot in terms of story.

He meant Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen (or 2CD's Might and Magic: World of Xeen) rather than Heroes V from Nival. :-)

Oh now I see it. :) I've only played the Heroes games so I tend to forget about Might & Magic. :)

Posts like this make me think this section should be merged into the "Might and Magic" section...

It's a reboot? I thought it was a completely different story. All they have done is carry over a few names.

Note that characters with the same name are not necessarily the same character. The Heroes games just reused lots of names from the Might&Magic games.

I know, but, the first six Chronicles chapters are set over several centuries before Heroes of Might and Magic I, which is set a couple decades before the Succession Wars, and in Might and Magic III: The Isles of Terra, :::spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler::: The Party attempts to pursue Sheltem by boarding a space ship (The Lincoln) and taking off the planet, but instead of catching Sheltem, they crash land on Antagarich (a decade or so before the Succession Wars) and become important plot characters in Might and Magic VII, and these characters are definitely the same Crag Hack the Dwarf, the same Kastore, the same Maximus and the same Resurectra you played as in Might and Magic III, and not the ones you encountered in the Heroes series.

Which is why I say that chronologically, you've got six of the Heroes Chronicles chapters, then you've got Heroes of Might and Magic I, then the Sheltem saga from Might and Magic I to V, and then it's the Succession Wars, Shadow Of Death, The Mandate Of Heaven, Restoration of Erathia, For Blood And Honor, Armageddon's Blade, Clash Of Dragons, Day Of The Destroyer, the Sword of Frost, and then Heroes of Might and Magic IV. I'm not sure about the exact order of the last four titles however.

First of all, lovely post from PetrusOctavianus. Bravo.

Now for us who are not interested in Might and Magic games only in Heroes is it safe to say that HoM&M lore chronology goes like this:

Heroes Chronicles: Warlord of the Wasteland
Heroes Chronicles: Conquest of the Underworld
Heroes Chronicles: Revolt of the Beastmasters
Heroes Chronicles: Master of the Elements
Heroes Chronicles: The World Tree
Heroes Chronicles: The Fiery Moon
Heroes of Might and Magic I
Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars
Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death
Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia
Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade
Heroes Chronicles: Clash of the Dragons
Heroes Chronicles: The Sword of Frost
Heroes of Might and Magic IV
Heroes of Might and Magic IV: The Gathering Storm
Heroes of Might and Magic IV: Winds of War
Heroes of Might and Magic V
Heroes of Might and Magic V: Hammers of Fate
Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East
Heroes of Might and Magic VI

If someone can confirm/clarify this with semi-detailed explanation or a link to a place where one can be seen it would be great. I found this but it just seems too extensive
Seems to be consensus so far.

FYI, there is an extensive discussion at the Heroes Round Table:
