Hi,

just see the image attached. I get a Microsoft C++ Visual Library Error which says abnormal program termination.

Any ideas? I tried to play with the compatibility settings, but it didn't help

Are you playing on a computer with a multi-core processor? That is the root of many such problems running Heroes 3 on modern systems. I had to buy a new Win Xp, single core PC in order to play Heroes 3, Warlords III etc. Sadly, while it is possible to manually force your computer to use only a single core while playing Heroes 3, this is a pain to have to do every time you play and the programs on the net which allegedly allow you to permanently patch things to always run with a single processor do not work very well and are almost devoid of instructions on their usage.
Yes, I have a dual core running WinXp. I tried to alt-tab out of the game and set the cpu to CPU 0 in program manager, but the game still crashes when I load that particular save, so I cannot continue the scenario.
The save might be corrupted.
Tried Win95 compatibility? You can also use an application like setaffinity to permanently change to one core for a given exe (make a backup first).
I use RunFirst. It's not a difficult program to use and fixes issues I've had with Diablo 2, Divine Divinity, Gothic and some others. I hadn't used it with HoMM3 yet, but I just went and tested it and it fixed my issue in combat.

So. Here is link. It's a tiny 20kb files.

http://www.activeplus.com/products/runfirst

1. Copy the RunFirst.exe into the main directory of the game you want to run (like C:\Games\SpecificGameYouWantToPlay). As long as it's in the same place as the game's .exe .

2. To use it specifically with HoMM3, find your GOG shortcut to the game, left click on it, go to the target bar, and change where it says [ "...\....\Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete\gogwrap.exe" HOMM3COMPLETE ]. Delete HOMM3COMPLETE and change gogwrap.exe to heroes3.exe. Preserve the quote marks around the filepath.

3. Also in the target bar, BEFORE the opening quote of the heroes3.exe path, add (without brackets) [...\...\Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete\RunFirst.exe"].

Providing you copied RunFirst into the right place and have your install paths (so not ...\ literally :P), you should get a black small RunFirst window appearing just before Heroes 3 launches, binding it to one CPU core.

Hope that helps :)
Hi,

I play the Heroes 3 Might and Magic on my PC (Windows 10 Pro). Processer : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3360M CPU @ 2.80Hz.

I had never problems with the game till yesterday. In the middle of my game a screen with Runtime error appeared and the game shut off. Even when I reopen Hereoes and my game (thanks to autosave) the same screen appeared.

Do you know what's the problem and how to solve it?

Merci,
Janita

Hi, I had one runtime error too, but before the opening map, after the start bonus choose. Same with the saves, same starting new campaign. So, I uninstall the game (you can keep savegames), upload the game on my disc drive to install it directly from there. Another problem appear: he didn't find a file. The file was here but the name if false because of %20 instead of space etc. Rename correctly the file. Then you can start the setup and install the game. Well, My game is in inglish now (not in french as I choose), but it works now. Maybe this help you.

Hi gain,
Another classic problem is the impossible movement of the ennemy. I already saw one ennemy use a portal to go and back again and again with no end. In this case, no other choice that start the map or the campaign. This situation appear sometimes but not so much.
