Since the community saved HOMM2 windows version by "heroes2win10fixes".
How about save the elder?

HOMM1 on GOG is the DOS version played through DOSBOX.
Anyways, I'm still able to play HOMM1 Windows version on my windows 10 pc, only it has to be in windowed mode though.. In what way does it not work? I have the latest update and 64bit.

UPDATE: GREAT NEWS! I found a fix for windows 10 on a Russian website (just use google translate on it). It essentially uses a graphical wrapper to fix the game. It's made by a guy called Verok so all creds to him for his truly fantastic work. This really makes the game playable to the fullest in the windows version with cd audio. He has files for HOMM II, III and IV too so I can't wait to try those out!

Enough stalling here's the link:

(If you don't want to translate just download the file called "HoMM I & II - GL Wrapper" and extract the wing32.dll in your install folder where heroes.exe is.)

Thank you very much! It works.
I just finished my first playthrough of the farm campaign with this wrapper and it really made my experience better. I have, however, found that occasionally the game will crash and I'm not able to pinpoint the reason why. It almost seems like sometimes when you start the game it will be prone to crashing, and it'll happen shortly after, or it won't crash at all. This essentially means that you might have to restart the game one or more times before it becomes stable, for some reason. I believe someone on that russian thread said it had to do with NVIDIA gpus, but I can't be certain since it's all google translate.

Also, I noticed that my install of the game doesn't natively show the control menu bar when it starts in windowed mode, which is fixed by pressing F4 and F4 again to exit and enter full screen. This also seems to activate the wrapper if it didn't already activate.

I also found that having vsync enabled made the game very slow, so you might want to disable it. I didn't notice any tearing with it disabled and I'm playing on a laptop with a GTX 850M.

I also liked the addition of xRBz filtering, even if I noticed alot of people in the russian thread above really dislike it. For some reason having xRBz filtering enabled makes it easier for me to see details in the game.

Anyways, I hope more people will find this useful, and maybe someday the great GOG team would be able to implement a solution like this for HOMM1 windows version, for those that would prefer that over the DOS version through DOSBOX.
