See if installing the latest version of DirectX 9 helps you:

If not, please specify which HoMM game gives you trouble, as well as what are your system specs, especially operating system and graphics card.

I have the same problem. I'm trying to play it using Windows 7. Have tried running as administrator, changed W7 to run older games and set down the screen resolution and colours to 256. Out of ideas.....
Any suggestions other than direct x
Oh and graphic card is 1/2gb Nvidia.
