There are plenty of players on the Gameranger client, and it takes care of connection issues so no VPNs required.

It's a matchmaking service.

http://www.gameranger.com

You can download the software there and find help\support (including a list of supported games). Just register for the basic account, it has the features you need to get started.

Is there any other way other then gameranger? A buddy and I have been trying to get back into heroes 3, but gameranger does not seem to work for us despite what we try to do.

It's possible that universal plug and play is not enabled in your router settings. Otherwise, you can use a VLAN application like Hamachi to trick the game into thinking you are directly connected on a local network.

ive tried using Hamachi to do this trick like I do most other games, however the hosted game cannot be seen or connected too.

A bit late with reply, but here it is:

While using Gameranger to play HoMM3 over internet, me and a friend of mine experienced lots of troubles before we got it working.
The fact that one can host / join a game while another one only join is related somehow (we haven't figured it out how) to the fact that my friend plays the game with a wireless connection.
The fact that I couldn't even host a game in the first place was due to my antivirus / firewall software. I added the game to the exceptions list, and we can play now.
been trying to download heroes of might and magic 3 on to my mac for three days now lol, if anyone can step me through it that would be appreciated!!

1. This is not a relevant thread.

2. The game is not for Mac, which you would've known if you read the store page.

3. Use Wine or PlayOnMac.
