Hi everyone,

I'm new to HOMM III and could really do with some help in one of the aspects of the game.

Basically, I don't know how to get my heroes to learn spells. Well, I thought I knew, but it isn't working.

I thought that for heroes to learn spells you had to make sure they had a spell book, and then place them in a city that has a mage guild overnight. I just started a new game and it just wouldn't work - no one is learning any new spells.

I wasn't sure if faction had anything to do with it, so I kept buying heroes until the faction matched (a cleric in a castle city), but that still didn't work.

Is there something I'm missing?

I'd be very grateful for any help.

Thanks

1. You are correct - hero needs a spellbook to be able to learn spells (there are exceptions, but this is a major rule).
2. You don't have to stay overnight in a city with mage guild - entering and leaving the city will do.
3. A hero can learn spells in many ways:
- beforementioned visiting a city with mage guild;
- visiting a shrine - only 1st, 2nd and 3rd level spells;
- "collecting" a scholar - one of effects can be learning of a spell;
- on-map event - one of effects can be learning of a spell;
- completing a quest (Seer's Hut) - one of effects can be learning of a spell;
- visiting a Pyramid - after victorious fight with Golems (40 Gold and 20 Diamond) hero learns a random 5th level spell;
- using an Eagle Eye skill in a battle (passive) - chance to learn a spell that's been used in a battle by your opponent;
- contacting with your another hero with Scholar skill (just one or both of contacting heroes must have this skill) - heroes learn spells from each other.
4. Wisdom skill is neccessary to learn 3rd, 4th and 5th level spells (Basic, Advanced and Expert skill level repectively). It can limit some of learning opportunities mentioned above!
5. Some artifacts (like Tomes of magic, Spellbinder Hat, etc.) grant temporarily specific spells knowledge to hero wielding (wearing) them, but only when they're active!
Thanks for the reply mate, do you have any idea why it's not working in my game? I thought it would be the wisdom level that was the problem, but even my Cleric who can learn level 3 spells isn't learning any.

Never mind! I've spotted my error! I've just noticed there are map spells and combat spells. I didn't realise there were two different spell categories. Everything is ok now!

Well, something obvious for someone familiar with a game can be a problem to newbie. :)

I'm still learning new tactics and tricks, even after twenty years of playing! There are many things that you have to learn and remember, for example spells and special attacks immunities, which are usually logical, but sometimes not and not everything can be found in manuals and in-game descriptions. :)

Hey now, we're not quite to twenty years yet. Or were you an original KB player?

OK, my bad. :) Fifteen years of playing HoMM III. I play computer games for more than thirty years now, so access to my memory might be, well, random sometimes. :P

Yes, I was. I still got it installed on a very old computer (P133, 48MB RAM, Matrox Millenium 1MB video card, Win98SE) that serves now as a shelf for some stuff. :) But if I'd plug it in, I suppose it would be working fine.

EDIT: missing letter.

I came on board the franchise with the original HOMM (still have the box!) but stumbled on the original KB with 5 1/4 floppies a couple years ago at a free yard sale. I have an old 486 in storage, but I'm doubting I'll ever hook it up again to see if it works.

You have any opinion on Heroes 6 and the steam sale on it?

Sorry to necro, but in fact, the first HOMM came out in 1995, so by 2014, one could have been playing HOMM for about 19 years already. - pretty close to twenty years :P
