I cannot, for the life of me, get cheats to work on HoMM 5. Any guidance?

I cannot get the console command to display. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, or if I'm following an incorrect guide. Hopefully someone here might have a more up to date set of directions.

Thanks!

It's probably because you're editing the wrong file...

You installed in Program Files folder and you're editing the file autoexec.cfg located in your game directory, right?

Unfortunately Windows 7 and later "protects" most of the files in these folders and makes copies to the Virtual Store. The game then reads files from the Virtual Store.

The file that you have to edit is located in:
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\<program name>

EDIT:
Also note, that besides editing autoexec.cfg you also have to edit the input.cfg file located in My Documents/My Games/Heroes Of Might And Magic 5/Profiles/<profile name>

"A common error when the console does not open is to edit the wrong input.cfg file: you should edit the one in your profile in "My Documents/...", NOT the one in "GAME_FOLDER/profiles/"."

I am running Vista on an older setup. I installed to a games folder on my desktop, but the profile where I'd insert the tilde key command to bring up the console is elsewhere. That may be the problem, even though I have edited the correct files.

I'm actually also getting some save game problems - I think I'm going to uninstall and reinstall, and see if that helps at all.

Thank you for the reply!
Same problem here. Same game. I edited the correct files in correct folders and the in-game console hasn't showed up. Can GOG please fix it?
I actually managed to get this working. You need to edit the <GAME FOLDER>/profiles/autoexec.cfg file and add the line: setvar dev_console_password = schwinge-des-todes
Then you need to create the binding, in the c:/Users/<USERNAME>/Documents/My Games/Heroes of Might and Magic V/Profiles/<PROFILE NAME>/input.cfg file, like so: bind show_console '`'
The first one goes after the line mainmenu, while the second in the beginning of the file, in the Common Section. Doing all this I have console and cheats enabled.

Where in the Common Section?

Anywhere, just make it be in that section -_-
Hi.

I bought Homm V on GoG.

I try to activate the cheats but i can't found how.

I edited all the input.cfg and autoexe.cfg i can find (in game folder, and user folder).

But wih windows 10, it still doesn't work.

Can someone help me ? With file do i have to edit to activate the cheats please ?
Same with me. I bought MoMM5 bundle on GoG and cannot activate the conslole commands. Windows 10 PC. This will make the game a bit less fun for me so if anyone has any ideas please share them.
They may have been disabled 100%, as i have edited the required files for Tribes of the East and base game(came seperately) and yet when i type in a command it does nothing
i am able to get the command line to come up.. but i found on some website the cheat "add_all_spells" and it does nothing. anyone have an easier way to get all the spells. i am at the point in "the lord of heresh where i need to use angel wings and then fight battles manually (which sucks) and i dont have the spells i need to get past this. i have been stuck on this forever and am unable to skip or continue the game. grrr any ideas??

I know this post is pretty old, but as I was searching for the correct way today and found nothing working for me, so I will post what worked for me here.

You need to edit the <GAME FOLDER>/profiles/autoexec.cfg file and add the line at the end: setvar dev_console_password = schwinge-des-todes

In c:/Users/<USERNAME>/Documents/My Games/Heroes of Might and Magic V/Profiles/<PROFILE NAME>/input.cfg do the following:

Placement within the file is what matters. At around line 90 you should find "// obsolete, but strictly need for compability with some interfaces" followed by a block of binds ending with "//END debug keys". This is where you want to add your prefered key for the "bind show_console". (see attached screenshot)

Afterwards you will be able to open the console in single player. First thing you need to type is "enable_cheats". Afterwards you can use any command with "@" from as detailed on the relevant cheat code pages (cant post links). All other cheats like "add_all_spells" will propably not work.

Syntax matters, so take a close look at what you type.

This works and it's very helpful. Many thanks!
