Windows 10: I think the problem was with the multiple cores use of PC, had a similar case with Thief. Fixed through Task manager => Details => right click on the game/App => set affinity => left everything to CPU0 and the game stopped crashing

Could you try GL Wrapper? This problem is fixed in it.

KriZo: Anybody playing HoMM 4 on windows 8? I have problem, it sometimes crashes during battle. The only thing i can do, is ctr + alt + delete and then shut down the process. I have tried the different possebilities gog.com surgests in the support section, but not any luck. Im using the built in GPU in my core I5 for running the game, it lacks like hell if I use nvidia. Any good ideas on how to solve the issue?

Alfie3000: Have you tried running the game on one processor core? (Start the game ---> Alt + Ctrl + Del to go into task manager ---> Right click on the Heroes 4 .exe in the processes list ---> click set affinity ---> have only one box ticked) You'll have to do that every time you start the game. Heroes 3&4 are know to crash on multi-core CPU's it's a shame GOG still haven't made run on one core out of the box. Although Heroes 4 seems to have more issues with crashing.
30.01.2022 and this is still a thing. Your solution works on Windows 10 as well though.
Thank you.
