I recently bought HoMM2 on sale but after installing I found the movements of my heroes are not very smooth (stuttering), and the sound is pretty choppy when changes themes... Do I need to install some mods? The GOG version is patched already right? Thanks

I'm encountering the same problems + DOSBox crashes pretty often. Can we get the Windows .exe please?
Same

The music hiccups a little bit when switching between world view and towns. It's not bad, often not noticeable..

Heroes definitely stutter around a lot though. Really annoying

The homm2.gog file is actually the ISO image of the game CD. You can mount it as an ISO and copy the windows version off of it.

I tried, but I can't get it to actually run under win7-64

I find if I use the basic sound (no stereo or opera), then no sound stuttering, but I don't know how to work around the visual.
never mind

I too got sound choppiness, I found a fix for it though. Maybe it'll work for you without you having to use basic sound.

What I did to fix it:

Go to the game folder where you installed it to, and open the "dosboxhomm2.conf" file in the game folder with wordpad or another similar program.

Once it's opened, find the "[mixer]" heading. This is where the sound stuff is located.

Under the"[mixer]", find the "prebuffer=10" line. Now change the 10 to 100. Then save the file and try the game again to see if the sound is fixed.
Changing the prebuffer to 100 definitely helped the sound. The adventure map is a little choppy when the horse gallops...now I need a fix for that.
Yeah changing prebuffer to 100 helps with the sound thanks!
Thanks for posting this! It fixed sound on the first Heroes game also for me.
You can actualy change extension form homm2. gog to homm2. iso (this file is within game directory) mount it, then copy heroes2. exe off it and paste in game directory. Basicly you should replace exe file, but to be safe, make backup of original exe. The stuttering is reduced so much, it becomes somewhat possible to paly the game. CD opera music also works.
Dont forget to change homm2. iso back to homm2. gog when done, otherwise game will not work.
Then again, if you dont care for cd opera, there is heroes2w. exe wich is windows version and should work fine (atleast in xp it does)

Thank you so much for this. The visual stutter was driving me crazy, and this tip fixed it. Not sure why GOG would package this messed up executable in place of the original file when the original seems to work a lot better.
This won't happen and stutter was not introduced by any changes made by GOG (I think they actually haven't fiddled with that exe).

The exe on the ISO is the original game EXE from PoL CD.
The exe in the game folder is the game EXE after applying official patch (game v. 2.1). One of the things it fixes are campaign movies that are no longer cut at last seconds (problem introduced by PoL).

It also adds random maps to map and (according to its readme):
* All single scenario maps may now be loaded in the editor. If you save
them out again, they will have an underscore prefix, so they don't
overwrite the originals.
* Sound and Video support code has been updated, which will clear up
some problems. (See the troubleshooting section for more help).
* Old CD Rom drives which can't handle the switching code should now
display a normal error message, rather than simply crashing.
* A bug preventing the entering of long IP addresses in internet play
has been fixed.
* Some communication errors when hosting a TCP/IP game have been fixed.
* Occasionally, when a very large number of objects were placed in
the editor, it would crash. This has been fixed.
* The DOS version allowed invalid save filenames. Filenames are now
checked for accuracy.
* The * and , symbols may now be used for modem dialing (*70, disables
call waiting)
* Deleting events and rumours in the editor didn't work properly before.
This has been fixed.
* Undead units were showing bad morale, even though they don't have morale.
This has been fixed.
* Ghosts were growing faster than they should have when retaliating. This
has been fixed.
* The Lost Continent map had a buggy mine which has been fixed.

Anyone find a fix for this without having to downgrade the game version?
