HoMM3 frequently crashes to desktop without any error messages.
No logfiles to be found to explain what happens.
Mostly happens when entering a town, but allso when selecting a hero.
Anyone else having this problem?

hooby3dfx: OK, I am fairly confident that the issue is with dual processor/multi-core systems.
This page explains a fix used for System Shock 2, and the same should work here:

You can right click the homm3 process in Task Manager and set affinity to one CPU, or to make the change permanent you can use imagecfg:
Download imagecfg (Google) and copy it to your HOMM3 folder. Make a backup copy of homm3.exe since the change is permanent.
In a cmd terminal (may have to be run as admin), run the following two commands in the HOMM3 folder:
imagecfg.exe -u homm3.exe
imagecfg.exe -a 0x1 homm3.exe
That should do it!
I know this is old but still very relevant. Thanks very much for posting the solution.

This thread should be stickied to help others that run into this issue especially where multicore systems are the norm now.
