Hello! I have HoMM2 Gold and want to access the Editor. I have Windows 10 and haven't found a solution in the forums. I have EDITOR2.exe in the DOSBox folder of HoMM2 Gold folder.

Trying to open EDITOR.exe gives me the error message "This app can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher".

Trying to run the file as an admin I get "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Games\HoMM 2 Gold\DOSBOX\EDITOR2.EXE'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again."

There isn't a shortcut icon for the Editor under the start menu. I have tried running program compatibility troubleshoot and get that it's compatible with Windows 7. Testing the program after that opens the DOSBox but then it just sits there on the regular opening screen.

Dragging EDITOR2.EXE onto the DOSBox icon opens DOSBox opens DOSBox but not the application. It says:
C:\>EDITOR2.EXE
DOS/4GW Professional Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.97
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc. 1990-1994
Can't open file: .\DATA\heroes2x.agg

Also, opening DOSBox Configurator from the start menu opens the configurator but only for HoMM2 Gold and not the editor. There's nothing under any of those settings that are applicable, and hitting Start Game doesn't even do anything.

Please help! I remember doing something with HoMM on like Windows 95 and before but don't know how to do anything on Windows 10 :(

Thanks in advance!

First of all, don't install GOG games in C:\Programfiles.

Draggin editor2.exe into DOSBox (assuming editor2.exe is a DOS file, which from the description and the fact that it does run in DOSBox it probably is) will NOT work since DOSBox won't use the correct conf file which mounts drives properly.

Open your HoMM2 folder and look for .conf files. You can open them in notepad. Back them up in case anything happens. If there is just one file, scroll to the bottom and under autoexec, replace the Homm2 executable with editor2.exe. If there is more than 1 file, find the one which contains autoexec; it's probably the one with "single" in its name.

After that, you can use the normal shortcut to run the editor. Change the conf file back to the homm2 executable to run the game.

You can create a separate shortcut for the editor. Make a copy of the conf file, edit it as described above. Save it as editor.conf for example. Make a copy of the shortcut. Right click, then click Properties. Under "Target" change the text found after the -conf parameter to point to editor.conf that you just created.

Let me know if anything is not clear and you need more help.
