Press F4 to switch to windowed mode, and you should find a menu with some (fixed) resolutions

Or, even better, try the HD fan-made patch, which works pretty well with the GOG version

That's awesome. It works just as I wanted, thanks mate!
Unfortunately when you press F4 you receive a prompt to change color to 16 bit which will not go away even when you run in color compatibility mode for 16 bit so that option is impossible.

HD mod bypasses this issue altogether
I'm looking for a mod or a config that *only* changes the resolution for the game, as the HD and HD+ mod tweaks with a lot of the gameplay that makes me confused and basically ruins much of the nostalgia gameplay for me.
I mean, if I go to a Witch's Hut, I want to see the insult or learnt spell, not just get a notification in the hero-information corner.
A lot of the stuff that makes the game really nostalgic to me is either changed or removed because the maker of the HD/HD+ mod decided that it needed fixing.
And since the fixes are hardcoded into the mod, there is no way of removing them and *only* use the resolution-part of the mod.

I just turned on Wine's desktop emulation. That was nearly identical to playing in windowed mode.

Maybe I will have to research the HD patch sometime, but this allows the original version to run nicely.

Most of the new stuff is tied to the HD+ option; if you unselect that checkbox in the launcher, it should behave more vanilla-like; there are no real "gameplay" changes, only QoL features of the user interface mostly... I'm not that nostalgic about having to confirm each time I gather a bunch of gold/ore on the map, it has zero effect on the game outcome, and only affects my left finger, but to each his own ;)

Having said that, if you prefer plain HOMM3, just use the wrapper described in the sticky post
