hi there, I just recently started playing heroes chronicles, at the moment I'm in middle of finishing the 1st scenario (warlords of the wastelands). however I found most of the scenarios are just too easy,. will the it be getting harder in the next scenarios?
Too easy? *laughs*
Choose impossible difficulty (with no resources) for each scenario and start again. Several scenarios are quite hard with 'Impossible' difficulty set.
oh yeah I just realized I could adjust the difficulty level. I play in normal mode to keep balance though. I dont like playing something that's too difficult either.
Unless playing a small map, where the AI will finish you off before you get time to build up, I've found that most HoMM 3 maps are most fun if played on Impossible level. Then you really have to plan the building up of your castle, and every bit of resource counts, making the Locate (?) spells actually useful.
Chronicles was designed to be easy. It was made to be a intro for people who had never played Heroes before. As you go along, you'll find silly little reminders to collect resources and visit creature dwellings weekly, etc. Also, experienced players will finish each map before the story has even finished being told.

Personally, I always found the difficulty settings in the HOMM games frustrating instead of challenging. It never really affects the AI at all and simply puts you at a disadvantage resource-wise to the AI, who will frequently simply wander over with a massive army and wipe you out before you've had a chance to even begin to build anything remotely recognizable as an army. It might be a little better on Chronicles though, since more than anything else, it's the maps that are designed to be easy...

This is one of the reasons I really like the SoD campaigns' adjustable difficulty settings. People can play through the whole campaigns on impossible if they feel like a challenge, but they can also turn it down if they're doing super-annoying levels, like Crag Hack's entire "No Taverns or City Halls for you!" campaign. Though the easier difficulty won't necessarily help if the computer's primary heroes all start with Fly and decide to attack inside the first week (which happened to me once or twice).

Difficulty does affect AI and not just resources.

Apart from the stuff listed there, I've noticed that on Normal and above, the computer is pretty good about keeping its creatures just out of your creatures' reach in battle if they have a higher speed value than yours. On Hard and above, the computer will often use Wait, which it won't use at all on lower difficulties. On Easy, enemies will never flee. Sometimes it does these things even if they aren't a good idea tactically, but the AI isn't really super-advanced in the first place. I'm sure there are other changes in battle, these are just the ones I've noticed.

Chronicles uses the SoD build, so it has both the adjustable difficulty and set item features just like SoD had. I always found Impossible to be a bit over the top, but Expert is the way to go for me.

Hard, I believe, is actually the "balanced" difficulty in the sense that I don't think there are any handicaps on either side.

If I recall correctly, on Normal the human still gets a starting resource bonus, the AI only builds structures every other turn(!), the AI won't use Wait in combat(!!!)... Not exactly a level playing field.

Exactly. If we look closely to the differences among difficulties:
Hard Difficulty

AI will correctly estimate the strength of human player armies when deciding whether to attack them.
AI will be cautious about moving it's heroes into dangerous situations.
Computer players can build structures every turn.
AI is very aggressive about town development.
Computer players will search for Grail when they have revealed 1/4 of the Puzzle Map.
Individual computer players won't hire heroes if they already have four or more.
Computer players as a whole will not hire heroes if they already have 14 or more between them.
Expert Difficulty

AI is extremely cautious about moving heroes into danger.
AI searches for Grail as soon as it can identify the approximate location of the Puzzle Map.
Individual Computer Players will not hire heroes if they have five or more.
Computer players as a whole will not hire heroes if they already have 14 or more among them.
Impossible Difficulty

Individual Computer Players won't hire heroes is they already have six or more.
Computer Players as a whole will not hire Heroes if they have 20 or more among them.
We see that there is not much difference of AI between Hard and higher difficulties (if you play the campaigns, the grail is nothing; and the difference of numbers of hired heroes is not a big issue), besides, you get balanced resources, as you said.
