whenever i do combat using the GOG version of heroes 3 the Hexes never appear, which i know that to be a thing that exists because of videos and partially the fact i once borrowed the game from a friend using a physical disk,

i am not complaining, i am wondering if anyone knows how to fix this issue,
i am running windows 7 32 bit service pack 1, i have heard others have the same issue as me (particularly my friends brother, whos running windows 7 or 8 im not 100% sure, but it is a modern OS)

i have tried running it in compatibility mode (which for some reason was never enabled automatically by GOG, all the other games i have purchased do it...)

has anyone found a fix? it is a bit of an annoyance, as it makes it hard to judge where you will move units to, but it is still playable

This is an in game option that can be set.

Ounce in a battle click on the icon bottom left corner. It's shaped like a computer and is Combat Options. View Hex Grid is the first option. Put a check mark in it and your good to go.

Remember these options can only be viewed in battle. Other options there are things like Movement Shadow, Cursor Shadow and a few other things.
