Ever play a map that you just can't conquer?

That you spend days, weeks, months, trying to beat?

Like Captain Ahab trying to get the whale, I'm here trying to win this scenario.

So for the past month or so, I have been trying to beat this scenario. The closest I got was getting two castles, but I made a bad move and instead of trying a more defensive approach and getting the 6th creature building built in my home castle for a better defense, I was too aggressive with my main army away at another castle, and I was left with not enough resources to build the 6th creature building. It was then taken by the enemy and I never fully recovered.

Well, I never played Heroes of Might and Magic 1 before, but I have played all the others. After playing the first one for a month or so, I must say Heroes of Might and Magic 1 is a very good game in it's own right. I'm not just playing it to see how the first Heroes is, I'm actually playing it. I must say, I love it! But this scenario is getting the best of me every time... I know it's beatable, I almost had it in my grasp, but alas, the whale slipped beneath the waves. One tough scenario for me.

edit: Playing with King of the Hill, and A.I. on genius(it has to be, A.I. isn't so good), and on normal.

You do need to play aggressively to secure resources, balancing that with enough garrison units for defence (leave them unpurchased till an enemy hero is in range). The Heroes AI is pretty lacklustre overall though (for example, in 2 it would always go after ranged units first no matter what).

I don't have HOMM1 myself so I can't check out the specific map, I think it did have a remake in one of the later games...I'll have a look.
