I started out with HOMM2, never owned it myself tho. Used to play it at my friend's every day after school when I was like 8-9. I remember once I played the scenario seven lakes for the whole night and was finished in the morning (yea I wasn't very good).
HOMM 3 I have had for years, but I bought the complete edition here of course and I've been playing it a bit. I hate the AI a lot, but otherwise it's the best game in the series I think. Can't really comment on the AI of the other games since it's been so long.
HOMM IV I got when it first came out, played it some, very good campaigns, some good innovations, but clearly not as good as 3 was. I might check this one out again soon to freshen my memories.
HOMM V and it's first expansion I bought when it was cheap... played for like 2-5 hours before I decided it was garbage. Hated the map / 3D and some other stuff, but I can't really even remember all of the things I hated about it..
Haven't played the earlier ones. So in conclusion, HOMM 3 > 2 > 4 > 5

Thegreatbobo: when it came out, Heroes of Might and Magic II was my favorite game of all time. Even though III has just about more of everything, I didn't dig the art direction in that game and it clouded my judgement (and my bias towards 2.)
Now that after so many years, and playing both games, I can say without bias that Heroes 3 is definitely better. But that isn't to take away from heroes II. i have a special place in my Heart for both of these games!

I am going to try Heroes 3 just because of so many rave reviews, but I agree with you about the style. Heroes 2 had a perfect blend of graphics and music. It was wonderfully light and imaginative. Heroes 3 immediately turned me off so much with its grey half-arsedly "more realistic" graphics that I could never bring myself to buy it.
I have every expectation of liking Heroes 3 but missing the atmosphere of Heroes 2 while I play it.

Wishbone: I've only played HOMM2 and 3, and of those two, 2 is my favourite. There is a very special mood in HOMM2. The colorful graphics and the music are just perfect. I've just been replaying 3 for the past two days, and I still don't think it measures up. The graphics are horrible. Everything is brownish or greyish it seems, and all the buildings look more or less the same. It makes the game seem very generic, and the oodles of different blurry creatures all over the blurry landscape do not help the general impression. I much prefer the unique, vibrant world of HOMM2.
It's strange though, because I remember playing HOMM3 many years ago, and it seems to me that the graphics were much more reminiscent of HOMM2 back then. Did one of the expansion packs change all the graphics?

I'm hoping I don't feel the same way. Ever since Quake ushered in the dominance of gray and pukey greens, yelllows, and browns, I've found a lot of games visually dull if not outright offputting. I will buy Heroes 3 but don't look forward to the graphics.. My office life world is drab and pukey colored enough without firing up a game to see the very same thing all over again.
