Hi, I'm wanting to go through all the campaigns of HOMM III (something I haven't done before, though I have played random maps for years). I'd like to take advantage of any bug fixes, improvements, etc. that the community has made over the years. Yet, I have to admit, I'm kind of confused at everything that is out there. Could somebody explain which fixes/mods I should use if I first want to play the campaigns?

I know there is
HoMM 3 HD mod
ERA 2.6 (+ Wog)(+ Other mods)
Horns of the Abyss
VCMI

tl;dr
Are any of the above mods (or others you may know of) conducive to campaign playing?

Just go with HD Mod. It fixes some things (most importantly CPU patch!), it adds multiple resolution support and has some ease-of-use enhancements. You don't really need anything apart of it.

If you want to know more about the other mentioned projects, here's little info:

VCMI is engine recreation, currently beta. Playable, but definitely not complete. Also it is more of a platform for further game modification than game fix.

HOTA is an unofficial add-on. It adds tons of stuff, fixes some bugs and rebalances some game aspects, but the add-on itself will not give you access to the original campaigns. You will only have 2 HOTA campaigns that are currently available. To play H3 Complete campaigns, you will have to run H3 Complete (still available with HOTA installed).

ERA2.6 - another platform for mods. Its main feature is WOG (obvious!), but it also allows you easy mod management for Heroes. I don't like WOG very much, so I do not recommend it. Also from my perspective WOG would be better for scenarios rather than campaigns (at least the original 3).

The one were the game crashes every other turn if you have a multi-core CPU pc. I think the latest GOG version has that fixed too.

There are minor bug fixes in the HD mod if I recall correctly as well.

But I didn't save a list of those.

The game puts a high load on CPU. You can notice that when using a laptop - mine was instantly turning on the fan if I didn't cap the CPU at 30%.

HD Mod lowers CPU load.

As for the other problem it might fix it as well.
