Maybe it´s just me, but I get a lot of graphic distortions on a win7 64 laptop with intel hd4000 graphic card.
I can start the game and run it but the constant distortions made me quit at the opening scene right after the char creation.

pseudonymous: The US-CD version of the game required a shim to work on Windows 7; I would assume the problem with the demo is the same thing.
Do you know where I can find that update?

I don't know what patch you're talking about or what version GOG's version is updated to (the last official patch appears to be version 1.5) but official patches can be found at The Patches Scrolls.
Wow, glad they got this one, one of my favorites.

Seems to run without a hitch on my sys which is win 7 64 bit. Native res is 1900 x 1080 and game loads up fine with out any graphical issues.

JudasIscariot: It does, actually :)

This game presented almost no problems during testing. Seriously, it's one of the better coded old games we have in our catalogue :D

Nirth: Then it must be on my end. The peculiar issue with the demo is that the I received no error message, not even exe stopped responding. The process was active for a few seconds then just terminated itself.
I am getting same issue on windoes 7-64 bit, intel 4000 graphics card. I launch but windows says program stopped working. I uninstalled and downloaded a second time but same result.

settings program launches but, no matter what I try I cant get it to run.

edit: anybody else with issue running on windows 7. I kept trying to uninstall, download, and re-install again but no joy. I have tried to run in windows xp compatibility too.

sk2k: So this game supports widescreen resolutions like 1280x720 or do i get stretched images?
avatar
Simbabluenobi: When it started up it went straight to my Native Resolution which is 16:9 (1600X900) and I don't see any stretching in the game. It looks pretty good and the game isn't bad either .... Better than the Inquisitor so far anyways.
I think 1280X720 is 16:9 also ... that's where I play most of the games when I have a choice of setting.
Odd. My monitor is the same resolution as yours, but my game starts 1024x768. Looking at the config program, there are only options for that, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200.
How are you people running it at native resolutions?

Edit: angelalegria, it's most likely your Intel card. Running W764 here and it's just fine. If it's even remotely feasible, I'd strongly recommend a new graphics card. Not just for this, but for everything. You'd be much happier, guaranteed. Unless, of course, you're on a laptop. If that's the case, I don't know what else to tell you.

Ya know .... MEBAD !!!
You are right ... I am running 1024X768 ... Must have been that damn beer ...
didn't mean to lead anyone astray .... sorry

On the other hand Running it on a cheap desktop with Windows 7 (64bit) with an Intel integrated G41 Express Chip and it isn't a bad game and I played it about an hour and noticed No problems.

BUT ... Sorry about my mistake regarding the resolution ...

JudasIscariot: A shim? Waaaaaat?

Did the CD not fit in the drive or something?

sk2k: A shim? You mean a patch?
No, I mean a Shim. The game expects certain features of Windows 9x that aren't available in the general compatibility settings but are accessible through the compatibility administrator tool.

I believe the magic settings are adding EmulateHeap and HeapValidateFrees along with removing IgnoreScheduler from the base Windows 98 compatibility settings.

honestly i don't know how it's not stretched ... or it is ? :P : looks the gui use the native resolution ,The only moment where the non-widescreen is noticed is at the starting of the game : while the scrolling of main character.

one thing though the only issue i have it's the game credits are totaly black , i don't know how to fix this, it's not very important but still.

another point : the game's settings has some issues: outside the game by default low particles is checked , in-game it's not checked.

for the compatibility settings ; best post i found it's this one : http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/533502-heretic-kingdoms-the-inquisition/56397273

but it's from 2010 , so i don't know if it's still apply there, however the fps improvments for some users , could be worth a try, personnaly i didn't need to tweak anything.

FYI I just tested the GOG version of Heretic Kingdoms on Win 7 x64 bit Home Premium. Works like a charm. Beautiful in game music, too.

I too can attest to this. Works like a charm and sounds like a dream on windows 7 home premium 64 bit for me.
I wanted to try the demo before buying the game but I couldn't get it to work. :(

edit: bought the game. Works fine.

Yeah, the non-GOG version of Heretic Kingdoms can be a pain in the ass to run, due to some weird behaviour that it has.

You'll have to do some Windows compatibility settings with it to get it working right on the modern Windows, and looking at the GOG version, it does have the .sdb file, which was exactly the method I used to get my old copy of Heretic Kingdoms working right.

IIRC it has something to do with WinXP compatibility mode enabling the compatibility options necessary to get it working, but also enables other compatibility options which makes the game run sluggishly, so you had to download a special Windows program provided by Microsoft to enable the required compatibility options manually, while keeping the culprits disabled.

I would post the instructions here but I seem to have forgotten them too, thanks to GOG!

Perhaps this also applies to the demo as well.

I'm having the same problem, and I'm running an AMD Radeon HD 7700 series. What am I doing wrong?
