At first the game worked correctly, but now it pauses randomly. As you can imagine this is very frustrating. Any ideas?

Yes I suffer the same from time to time. The same occasionally with Doom/Doom II.

Have you selected Sound Canvas for Music? or General Midi? Try to switch different music drivers and/or try changing the Dosbox Speed cycles to something like "auto limit 20000" or "max limit 20000". Changing the mixer size should help as well. Originally it is set to 4096. Try with something like 2048 or 1024

1) Download and extract Chocolate Heretic from https://www.chocolate-doom.org/wiki/index.php/Downloads.

2) Copy heretic.wad into the same folder as chocolate-heretic.exe

3) Double-click on chocolate-heretic-setup.exe to set up your controls.

4) Once you have set up your controls, close setup.

5) Double-click on chocolate-heretic.exe
